I have a 65 Ford Ranchero with a passenger side door lock problem. The problem is You can not lock or unlock the door with a key. Pushing the lock button down and closing the door makes the button pop back up. Pushing the lock button down from inside the cab lets the lock work. Key works fine for driver's side door and Ign. Thanks for any help. Don

  2. a whole lotta penetrating oil first to soak up the hard grease

next would be to pull tha latch if it still does not work and get it in a partswasher and clean and lube it

if it still dont work then get a new latch:rolleyes:

  4. Does the key go into the cylinder easily? If so, can you turn the key in both or either direction? If the cylinder turns you may just have a fairly simple problem with the lock pawl or lock linkage rods coming unhooked. Or it might be an issue with the door latch itself. May be time to get the door trim panel off and do some snooping around. You might even find some pieces laying loose in the bottom of the door.

If the key won't turn in the lock it may need a good cleaning and some lube, or a new cylinder coded to your key.

Try holding the button of the outside handle in while closing the door with the inside lock button down. This was how they (Ford) kept you from locking your keys in the car, they made you think about it. The lock, or door, may have been changed due to damage. A good locksmith should be able to match that lock to your keys, if that is the case.

It sounds to me like the link between the key cylinder in the door and the latch assembly might have fallen off. Pull the door panel and take a look. You might find a small rod dangling inside. These things really aren't that complicated. Study what you have to see how it is supposed to work.

Thanks all for your input in regards to my door lock problem. I gave the lock cylinder a shot of WD40. The key can now lock the door. Door will not unlock with the key. Have to pull the inside lock button up. I am going to pull the latch assembly and go from there. Again thank guys.

On my 63 Ranchero, there was a little diecast piece that goes on the lock cylinder that "moves a lever" on the door latch. That piece between the lock cylinder and the door latch was broken on mine. I had a couple other lock cylinders from parts cars and was able to take that little piece from one and put it on the cylinder in the car.

I'm not sure if your 65 is the same or not.

I would not doubt the 63 & 65 use the same cylinder. Thank you very much for the info. Should be a easy fix.
