Projects Patch welding tips .....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by FAKKY, May 31, 2021.

  1. Build the door bottom on the ride. Line it up with the rocker panel.
    Then build the skin.
That skin is going to move around on ya.
Weld a few spots, hammer and dolly and grind. (This is how I mig weld a joint. A tig weld is usually continuous)
This allows the metal to cool as you work it. I never force cool a weld on sheet metal. The weld is a shrinking process on it own, force cooling increase that. Just my worthless opinion.
If a good pattern with reference lines is created, the entire process can be done off the vehicle.

As Anthony so wisely stated, use this!
NOTE: Best stuff is white in color, goes under the name "Bristol Board".
This can even be compound-curved somewhat, (without having to use a 'wheel')
    Great usage for mockup.

Man ....... there must be 3/8 of bondo where they tack welded some sheet metal in and shaped it out on top.
I've been ripping it all out and fillet welding it in place .....
