I will second the real or an older car that’s been left as found and cleaned up to honer it’s original build.
But for me the fake stuff never did it for me. If we were able to talk about RRs I can kinda get on board with some of it as some of it’s an art form and SOME guys seem to pull it of. But not on a traditional hot rods that we all like.

Fibreglass rods with fake rust....... no!

  7. I like and appreciate shiny cars, but old sweaty, rescued paint with every mark worn as a badge or marker of history, that tells a legitimate story really works for me. Park and drive anywhere without stressing over your -cost more than your wife’s engagement ring paint job- works for me. My only ever paint job cost me $375 bucks in 1979. Fake patina hopefully has run it’s course. As an example- not my car, for sale here on the hamb, to borrow a phrase from Anthony, I would drive it. 9BAA1780-E5F2-4133-BF3C-BCF97433F28C.jpeg

  8. Same thing with this one, the paint might be the best feature, again not my car. 7259AA57-7FAB-4BDB-A0F7-82A9E5A6B254.jpeg

  9. This one is my car, if I get it done I will struggle with how to finish it. It has some late 50’s chicken wire and bondo repairs, and a less than impressive shade of blue. At least it isn’t Kermit green. 09F652D0-5B50-4049-BC62-5F05F38654CD.jpeg

  10. A true old paint job that shows signs of being loved and used YES!!!!!!

fake patena , rust , holes and general crap . NO .

fibreglass cars and I’ve seen new cars with patina and bondo n stuff

    just silly

Paint isn't just for good looks, it is a preservative. I prefer a good looking body, who doesn't. It might not have to be GNRS-ish, bank-draining, only the gods good, but at least as good as when the car was new. Would you buy a new car, unpainted, rusting on the showroom floor already? No pride in ownership there, eh?

  12. "fake patina"..is this something new?
I am curious about what brand of spark plugs you like, or motor oil, what's your take on radial tires vs bias ply?

    Tired of original patina ?
No - because it's original only once, has a story and history.
Fake patina , just not my thing. You can try but copying original patina or history, pretty tough.
Nothing against anybody who tries to copy it - but again just not my thing.
    I like the real McCoy's.
But that is my personal opinion.

Frankly I've come full circle from a cheap beater as a kid to high dollar restorations ( high dollar ones at that ) years ago with mega $ shiny paint, chrome, etc etc and use to go to shows and collect trophy's. ( it was a lot of work to clean, polish, dust, sweat ).
From high dollar Hot Rods, Customs and Race Cars.

Now - Frankly, I just enjoy cruising , seeing friends at a weekly burger joint or go to local shows ( often parking close by) and again seeing friends.

I actually enjoy the treasure hunt of a original unrestored car/ truck as they are far and few between. That is fun.

Look at Dennis Collins, Jerry Heasly's or Wayne Carinni's videos of weekly or monthly car finds. Talk about finds.....
Man I could do that every day, travel the country doing that.

I have some survivors and most interesting is they garner more attention and comments because they aren't restored.

    But, to each his own.

You've been around long enough to know - he was referring to the paint.
Let's not micro filter this and leave it at just the paint.

    Thanks.

    Fake=not for me.

Real is fine, but don’t spend too much time blending where you elect to repair damage, as it ruins the authenticity.

GNRS paint on the other hand renders the car undriveable and thus useless. Give me some battle scars and road rash any day.

  18. What some guys have a hard time differentiating is decent patina and neglect. They are not one and the same. And if it is neglect and you fail to repair it that is just laziness. Ok, I'm done.

I'll stop and look at a true patina car before I will a high dollar paint job. Mother nature does good work. I like to imagine the history of what that old paint has been through, and think about the old guy shooting that paint while holding an old drop light in the other hand so that he could see.

Rusty is a daily driver with nothing fake about the paint job. Its just an old beater that runs, drives, and stops safely. That's all it will ever be. But I can't got to Home Depot or to pick up tacos without someone giving me the thumbs up or telling me they love the truck.

  23. Gosh, I must have wrecked my car getting rid of 92 year old "patina" the last couple weeks, I'll learn to live with it. IMG_1002.JPG 102_1205.JPG IMG_1012.JPG

I'm not tired of real patina. But I am tired of rotted out cars that people call patina. And I'm really tired of fake patina.

I have one finished truck that has nice paint... I hate it... I spend to much time cleaning it... I have one truck with old worn paint and it is great... I don't worry about it .... I just drive it.... If you don't like patina ... paint yours... Me I won't.....
