I'm sure the Ruby has been repainted in 90 years, but the oil company sign gives it some character and that can't be saved unless I opt for leaving the paint with primered repairs.

They are your cars, enjoy them as you want, my enjoyment is taking your patina cars and using the skills and equipment I have spent over 50 years acquiring and turning them into best examples of classics, hot rods and customs I can. And if you want me to respect your choice to cruise into and event and profess to be a car guy then don't stand around and judge my every nut and bolt build as a bought and paid for car either. I look at old cars and see something I need to save from years of neglect and pass them on to someone who hopefully will enjoy and care for them for years to come. Thats just how my mind works. Well worn paint is patina, which is ok.
Rust is neglect, which is not ok unless you’re driving a beater you plan on throwing away when it quits.

Fake patina is wasted effort when you could have something all one color instead of looking like a bunch of kids spent recess throwing paint at something.

Just my take, yours may be different, and that’s OK. We’ll just agree to disagree.

If there’s enough left to paint, I paint. If it’s ratty, it rusts and if it’s rotten, the rot is cut out repaired and fake rust applied. Some are too rough to waste your life restoring. Save your energy for the worthy. Enjoy them all in what you build regardless of where in the process you say enough.

As far as "patina" is concerned I believe it is actually the oxidation (bluish green) on copper not ferrous rust and buggered up paint. But to each their own...
