I thought they has closed too. I was told the printing cost for their 4" thick catalog put them in the red.
yea i went to there website to see if there were in business to check a price on a 455 olds engine kit and seen they was only selling hemi parts
I was wondering if anybody even noticed they were gone! They stopped printing catalogs a couple years ago, I got one of the 2007? or something, it was their final printed one. You had to download a pdf and print it if you wanted one. Who's going to do that?!? and I *hate* PDF catalogs, they're such a pain to use. PAW's website was atrocious, stuck in 1999. I think they finally got a shopping cart on there for online ordering a few years ago. They never had all their parts listed, and it just never seemed to work right. I saw some photos on the web, PAW used to be a nice speed shop with dragsters hanging from the ceiling and stuff. I went out there a couple years ago to chatsworth, next to some **** studios, and it was on life support big time. It's a shame, if for no other reason they used to buy lots of ad pages in magazines. I used to study those blower kits and whatnot and build engines in my mind in high school. I'd be interested to hear the full story, or at least another side, but it looks to me like management really blew it.
i know.. remember the dinosaur stroker kits? make huge motors for little money.. never knew of they were any good though.
Oh yeah I *totally* remember those stroker kits! I'd heavily weigh the pros and cons of the upgrades and CI sizes. Their cheap prices always made me wonder about their quality as well, but I never knew anybody that actually had built a motor with them, either. Odds are they were just as good as anybody else's cheap engine kit, if I had to guess.
lol wouldn't it be odd if thats what did them in.. what if.. it was a 500+ ci kit that was REALLY good.. but because of the price everyone got scared away.. when really it might have been gear heads trying to give quality products at an under cut price.. I think that might be a good thread starter.. anyone run paw stroker kits? i think I am gonna do some searching so I dont get busted by the repeat police....
Ahh the days before the net.. The Performance Automotive Warehouse.. I still never figured out why they called it "Home Mechanics" when I used to call.. I MISS going to thier Chatsworth location though, I used to love staring at all the cars and engines on display.. Just right across the street from B&M and a couple blocks aways from California Car covers.. and apparently a bunch of **** studios as well, (something the SFV was notorious for) I should mention.. I find it surprising the direction they went in, one would think they would continue only selling SBC stuff since thats all they would stock @ the No. Hollywood location. I really wish they were still around actually..
Actually, I don't really like Summit or Jeg's sites on the topic of site design. I think someone should make a site designed like mcmaster-carr. They would clean up.
I did all right with a cam and a rebuild kit from PAW for my 327, but that was back around '90-92 or so.
PAW was the parent corporation and the mail order warehouse, Home Mechanics was the local retail store. there were 3 of them, North hollywood (and they stocked more than sbc stuff..lol) topanga cyn and thousand oaks
Hey wait a minute. I got one of those on my free cheapo PAW engine stand. I had to pay for the sticker. BTW if you own one of the 750 lb capacity engine stands they had in the '90s get rid of it. they are really flimsy and a hazard to your health. I'm still using mine but I'm dumb. At least they are still peddling hemi parts it seems like that was what they always wanted to do anyway.
Ok now that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.. Ya I guess your right about not just stocking SBC stuff, they stocked some BBC stuff as well at most thier retail stores It got to the point that I would drive farther out (I used to live in Tujunga at the time) to the Chatsworth location so I didn't have to worry about them not having my part.
They were downright hostile if you brought up their website. Said they had too many parts to put them all on the web. Guess they don't have to worry about that anymore. Just when I was there a few guys called up asking for catalogs, all they could say was look at the pdf on the website, cuz they don't print them anymore unbelievable how they refused to change
I bought one of their "Master rebuilding Super Stock" kits for a '60 Lincoln (460 Ford) it was cheap. Came with a Crower flat tappet cam that had an idle (and this is no lie) that stopped Don Garlits and made him look. Was very fast for $1100. They were good by me.
I know of a couple of their 383 SBC kits still running around on the street. They worked well enough. You had to check their machine work carefully...just like every other machine shop out there. (shrugs)
Found out when I searched for the price I paid for a new torque converterfrom them ,For sale here cheap, Tacky but true ...............
