I've been getting emails from Paypal requiring info, correct logo, official looking. They want all kinds of personal info, acc.no.s, etc. or they're going to close my account.

As has already been mentioned, PayPal is owned by eBay. If you use either/both frequently, it is worth the little trouble to go get the eBay toolbar - it has an "account guard" that will flash red when you go to a s**** site or green when you're on a legit site. If you go to a s**** site, it will give you the option to report it or visit it anyway. Pretty cool all in all. I like it.

Went through that verification **** about a year ago. For some odd reason , they want to transfer the payment money out of your checking account instead of using your credit card.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yeah - quicker & easier - for them. You actually have less recourse, but you've nearly always got the option to select a different payment method (credit card, e-check). The only time you don't have that option is if the seller doesn't have the capability, or has refused that capability.

a good alternative to paypal is Western Union Bidpay,

    [/ QUOTE ]

I use BidPay for folks that won't take PayPal, but I've had several problems with them. They changed their name a while back to Western Union Auction Payments & then changed back to BidPay (WU has always owned them - it was just a name change game) & now their process is slightly different. They used to ask you to enter the seller's address to mail the MO to, now I guess they email the seller & ask for their address because you can't specify the address. This has caused confusion with folks who don't normally use BidPay...

My real beef with them, however, is the fact that as the buyer, I cannot cancel the MO under any cir***stances. The only recourse I have is to try to reverse the charges on my credit card (I think you'll end up banned from BidPay).

Had at least three MO never make it, yet I'm still liable for them - because they're good "forever". Just like USPS MO...they ought to have an expiration date, but...

I have had a Scandinavian buyer that over paid shipping waiting for his Rebate for several months.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Here's a tip to tell him - check PayPal! They will deposit refunds in your account and NOT TELL YOU! If you don't "claim" it after a certain time period, you could lose it. I've had this happen several times - folks will refund shipping overages (yeah, really!) & I have no idea unless I check my account balance at PayPal.

I've been on eBay since '98 & PayPal since '00 & have had few major issues with either (I've had zero issues with PayPal). Usually it's the sellers I'm dealing with that screw me - not the service providers.

Wow. They are wanting me to go from credit card to direct bank withdrawal (to them) and I've been thinking of doing it just to get "confirmed" as I am now "unconfirmed."

    [/ QUOTE ]

    YES! Me too.

I reached their $2k limit, and now they want me to become "confirmed" before I can continue.

I’m not crazy about giving them all my bank info.

I have just been doing the money order thing for about 6 months now....

I use PayPal quite a bit. I set up two accounts for their use..I have one credit card on file with a $300.00 limit..if a mistake is made that's all the exposure I have. And I have a checking account that I have a small amount of money in..that, too, limits my potential loss. If I buy something over $300.00 I make a deposit in the checking account then pay with PayPal. As an active ebay seller, it's a tool that has really helped..it cuts down on non-paying buyers and ends buyer's remorse..and help's cash flow...

No pay-pal acct, No debit card, No cell phone, No beeper, most of the time I don't even wear a watch.I don't borrow money,so I don't write checks, utility bills and insurance come right out of checking, and if the boss didn't make me have direct deposit I would still be getting a real paycheck.I have a charge acct. at the hardware store and if I'm short of funds I can just sign my receipt at the grocery store and pay it tomorrow.
Maybe I'm out of touch, yep I'm definately out of touch. Or maybe out to lunch!!! your choice.

Ah, the simple life. That is how I lived in Alaska. Every thing I owned was paid for, including my cabin. In store credit at the hardware store and gas station. Neither ever billed me, I just paid when I could and often traded out mechanic work. What a life, I could live good on less than a grand a month.

Ernie, Ive been on EBay since 97 and PayPal in 98. But with over 4000 positive feedbacks Im 99% a seller. What I see on this thread are primarily small time buyers who may have beat the PayPal odds so far.
What disturbs me is all the negative comments about sellers; are there that many bad ones out there? Or is it just a few that constantly get recycled? Ive bought maybe 50 items so far on Ebay and have had zero problems.

OTOH my problem is buyers who fall into several categories. Pure scammers, Canadians lead this category as they know that the USPS has no tracking to there and PayPal until recently listed them all as unverified; compe***ion trying to screw with me; non paying deadbeats; ****ing idiots who should be removed from the gene pool; and the whining crybabies who leave negative feedback without even contacting me about a problem.

As I said earlier I have a way of payback that ****s them a whole lot worse than it affects me. Also as a Power Seller I have a direct phone # to call with complaints; Ive had several ***holes kicked off Ebay. I take no prisoners!

PayPal doesn't charge anything for the bank transfer. That is how I pull all my money. I use a debit/credit card off a different bank account although you might be able to use it off the same account. I don't leave more than a hundred bucks or so in either account just in case some scammer gets his fingers on my account info. 2 years and I have never had a problem although it does take a while to learn how their system works with the verified buyer thing. You have a bunch of options on how you accept payments and you can refuse to take the hit for the credit card merchant services if you aren't a commercial concern and just have a lower level account. The only thing that tightens my jaw is that they can take my money from my bank account in seconds but take 3-4 "working days" which is more like a week, to transfer it over to me when I do a withdraw. I consider the risk worth it since I don't have to set at a swap meet all weekend trying to sell my **** for a third of what it will bring on ebay.Even most of the stuff I offer here first always brings more on ebay. I recently brought half a load of **** home from a meet, that didn't sell. I had many items that I got more than double for on ebay of what I was asking at the swap meet where it didn't sell.
There are a good many sellers on ebay that only take money orders but I think you are shooting yourself in the foot to do that. I mostly only buy stuff that I can use PayPal to pay for since I have to go to the grocery store to get a money order then get it mailed if I am working steady. And that is a P.I.T.A.
I am considering getting a PayPal debit card so I can pull the money as soon as the buyer pays instead of waiting for the transfer.

Paypal must charge a fee for something, howelse would they make a profit? What would I loose in fees on a $100.00 eBay sale? [IMG]

Carl - my few problems have been with individuals, not major sellers. I'm a buyer - never sold (although I should - I've got enough junk!). I think most folks want to get a deal - simple as that - for whatever reason, they're disappointed when the item doesn't match the picture in their mind.

Two things that go hand-in-hand on eBay:

Caveat Emptor & if it's too good to be true, it probably is

I've often had buyer's remorse, but am an adult who takes responsibility for my actions. On the flip side, when I know I've been cheated, I will always give the seller the chance to make it right. I preempt as much as I can, where I can with good communication.

My biggest complaint is overcharging on shipping - in this category, sometimes the major sellers are worse than the individuals. I understand materials & time cost something, but 3, 4, or 5 times shipping? C'mon.

Just rambling now - I do that! [IMG]

Last I heard,it was a couple percent, plus a fixed amount like 30 cents or something.
Of course,it depends on the type of account and payment options etc.
    NOTHING is simple anymore.
