I've limited my car show activities this year to just a few events, Rio Linda Ca. and Pomona Ca. in June and Pleasanton Ca. last weekend. My friend Wayne Rogan and I drive to the shows together, and he always keeps a mileage and gas log so I decided to do the same. In the three trips we covered 1,400 miles. I averaged 18.5 MPG, Wayne did a little better. My flat windshield and parachute top block a lot of wind. So, I used nearly 76 gallons of gas and at today's prices (I'll let you do the math) it was fairly costly. I definitely wont let this slow me down, but I'll be happy to see gas prices drop! I know 1,400 miles is pretty modest compared to a lot of other guys, so let us know how many miles you've driven so far this year.
Extra zero. 76 gals, 18.5mpg equals 1406 miles. Or he got his mpg wrong and he's getting 185 miles per gallon. Hahaha.
That Roadster Pickup is kept so tidy it looks like it hasn't been driven yet... One of the HAMB's stars.
Ventured south to Pleasanton many times over the years, thought it was the gold standard of events, miss it a lot, really enjoyed the downtown Danville and P-Town deals too, great atmosphere, I don't have the feet and legs for it anymore unfortunately. We appreciate you sharing your adventure(s) with us Blake.
I've cut back some miles also. So far this year, my trips were 2400, 1200, and 750 miles. One out of town trip left, estimate 700 miles. Don't think I'll make 6000 this year.
only about 7k so far this year...but Drag Week and the Great River Road Rally are coming this fall, so that should go up. last trip was just when prices were starting to go down a little, but it was a week in California, so I was glad the little Rambler gets almost 20 mpg.
For all practical purposes, I just got my '31 Model A coupe on the road this summer and did a bit over 1,000 miles total going to the Madd Mayor show and the Frog Follies. The Iron Duke delivered in the neighborhood of 18-20 MPG running mostly mid-50's MPH with the occasional burst of speed up to 65-ish. Best of all, I'm pleased to say it never let me standing on the side of the road! Lynn
I've been down this year on driving the oldies. Maybe done 3000 miles. Truck is down right now. Redoing rear frame. Looking to smooth the ride. It does get 24mpg. Wife's car still waiting on doors , then paint. Next year will be a lot of miles. Normal is around 7500 miles a year.
Gee, if I was to do as many miles as some of you fellas I would run out of road. I don't want to hi jack this thread, but I am curious as to how much petrol is up there. At the moment we pay near $3 NZD a litre, cheers
That would be about 11.35 a gallon in NZD which would work out to about $6.92 a gallon US with the current exchange rate. Damn that’s expensive!….and now my head hurts from the math. $3.55 a gallon for 87 and about $4.40 for premium. Southern MD It’s a lot cheaper in Virginia. 3.30 and 3.60 for premium
First time I've seen the T with side curtains, they really look nice. I think I've seen this car three times on my trips out West, photographs well but looks far nicer in real life.
...Yupp!!...Stunner of a Hotrod... $1.59 Canadian per litre......down from $2.00 a month ago...jeeze what a bargain......but a soon as you turn the key and step on the gas it feels better again...
My miles of smiles is lower this year/season also, not just because of gas prices, other factors have come into play, weather this summer, beautiful with a lot of rain, particularly on Saturday/Sunday, less events/cruises available and age/health issues have entered my world. IMO big picture, $20K/$40K hobby cars that get driven 2000/2500 miles per season has always been somewhat pricey fun, worth every penny to me. My definition of FUN, Fun costs money, all my life, I am, have been very fortunate to be able to enjoy all the toys of life, worked/played hard, No Regrets, Life is good.
Would it be mean to hate you? We just dipped to 4.89 a gallon a week or so ago (87 regular). Heck, I haven’t had a commute car in 10 years, but been pricing them out and looking for a month or so to get educated. 60 mile round trip a day. Anyways, to stay on point. Fuel cost for an event, vacation, fun, etc have to be figured into the whole thing you are doing. If you want to attend something that is 400 miles away, you’ll probably be paying for lodging, food, etc. If you get home and have a good feeling about the trip, that’s the best part.
76 gallons at $4 is only $300. Call it "therapy" to keep your mind right. $300 will only get you 1 or 2 sessions at a head shrinker, strip club, golf outing depending on how else you let off steam. Won't even get you close to a fishing trip or snowmobile trip. Drive it, a lot. Spend time with friends.
Embar***ed to say I haven't had my SHoebox FOrd out at all this year. Been driving my late-model Chevy truck all summer.
Screw it, I can't take the $'s with me. Don't shive a git how much the fuel cost. Have logged over 6000 miles so far and hope to do more this year. Usually do about 8 to 10 K a year
We won't stop till they stop us...that's my philosophy...I'm 62 so I'll be near 75 when 2035 rolls around...if I'm alive, of sound mind, body, have the Hotrod and gas is available I'll be still making real motor sounds the few days a week I drive it... That is the caveat about this Vintage Hobby...most drive here and there at select days...so the Carbon footprint may be significantly smaller than one would imagine... Doesn't mean it won't be targeted it will...but I don't regret driving the few thousand a year when other issues are far more worrisome for this big ball we share...
I've put over 5,000 miles on my '39 Chev coupe this year. I get about 17-18 mpg at 70 mph with OD trans, but around town where I drive mostly the mileage is not so good. But I'm not going to let the high gas prices interfere with me enjoying my old cars. I'm almost 72 now, and if I restrict my use of my old cars, not sure I'll enjoy the hobby I've loved for a lifetime.
I keep records of gas, oil, etc for my vehicles. August 26, 2013 I filled my tank at $3.279 a gallon August 27, 2022 I filled my tank at $3.299 a gallon
My wiring skills aren't great. If I have to figure out an electric hot rod,....Ah ****. High Gas prices for hot rod as my hobby. I can suffer thru it.
