What do you think about putting a pcv valve on my 53 merc flathead. I can smell the oil fumes from the fill tube ( i have an Edmunds manifold pre 49). I see some on ebay sells a kit for 49 53 manifold, but I am sure I can fab something up for the older manifold tube. Will this help or hurt . I need a shower after driving as the fumes get ****ed into the cabin. Thanks.

It seems you've answered your question in regards to suffering and doing away with it. The only other thing that would need addressing is the engine going to get leaner? That may be a simple as an idle screw adjustment. I say go for it.

I got one from Jamco for around $40, stopped the fumes, slowed up some small oil leaks and engine seems to run smoother after adjusting the carb a little richer. the only problem was the vacuum wipers stopped working but they are worthless when they worked, was going to install a electric motor anyway.

Works fine if you want to **** all the dust from outside through the block and into the cylinders.

I have one on my 51 Flathead. Paid $45 for the kit. Looks good and works good.

It is just above the thermostat housing and the hose runs to the rear of the intake under the carb.

I built my own. Ran the tubes into spacers under the carbs to be sure it leaned them all out. 4E06F69A-5EE0-4279-B225-4CC8E552031A.jpeg

    Phil,
You get a filtered oil fill cap with a male hose attachment for the inlet side.

P1060490.jpg I put one on my 59A. I had an Offy 4bbl manifold that the casting was for an 8BA. I drilled the road tube boss and put in aSBC valve. The manifold was drilled below the carb. The original stand tube in the valley got a freeze plug. The fuel pump stand got a lawnmower paper filter. I was happy with the rig.

On 49/53 engine, it works well. It's on the list for my avatar.

A rhetorical reference to the fact that there is anew thread on this subject every two weeks or so. You can almost set your sundial by it.

PCV= Positivly Contaminats Valves. Automotive manufacturing engineers statement in the early 60's. Does help with the smell but increasing carb idle mixture screws tells you something is a miss.....
