We tacked the hood to the car in all four corners to further prevent warpage. (this was a tip from a NOT so OLD timer mr Radshit) Also, Radshit was helpful over the phone whenever we had any questions. Thanks NEAL!
That is where we left it for now. We are just going REALLY SLOW so we don't mess up my hood. My friend Bones has been doing all the welding and I have been following close behind with compressed air to cool the welds. I think having two people on it is making it much easier. Here is apic of a Harley gas tank Bones is painting (pic is kinda bad, but the base is silver flake).
I love this pic man and nice job on the peak! We did it the same way on one of my fathers old cars and started to do it on my old 53 but I sold the car before i could finish it..Anyways, the car is really looking good my man. Keep up the good work! Dirty
well if you don't mind i'll jump in here and add the pics of Hotrodladycrzer's hood i've been workin on. i got the tapers at each end done. lots of cuttin, hammerin, weldin and grindin. the rear piece is about 10" long cause the break would only do a 48" piece and where Denise wanted her peak to start and stop made it somethin in the neighborhood of 54". i did the rear taper first with the short piece and then did the front taper and the complicated bend over the nose of the hood starting at the very front and working my way back. i have the rear of the long piece temporarily tacked in place and i will work my way from the front to the back to avoid the metal bunching up in the middle of the hood. when i get back to theshort rear piece i will trim the end of the long one to fit and metal finish it all in. i have the complicated parts done now and if it continues to go this smoothly there will be very little body filler needed. might even get away with just some heavy fill primer. kinda neat how there are different ways to go about doing the same mod. untill the magazine aricle last month i would have done it the same way as you FONZI. each method has it's own pros and cons.
i've only got about 6 or 7 hours into it at this point... in case you did'nt notice i did cut out the center of the hood and the new peak is getting butt welded in and metal finished. when it's all done it will no longer be a two piece hood.
I think the carefully placed Bud bottle helps to act as a heat sink to keep the hood from warping . . . it will also keep you from noticing if the hood does warp. looks cool man- the peaks ,along with that side trim really make the lines nice.
Every time I see the different methods of peaking a hood, I rethink how I want to peak the hood on my 54 Chevy. Don't know if I want to lay down some rod, or weld in some sheet metal. I like the stance of the business coupe. Geno
Kustombuilder, If I had your skills and experience I would have done mine the way you did. A limited amount of time, and a lack of sheat metal experience lead me down the path of using the round stock. I agree there are pros and cons for both. I think that if we take our time, and have plenty of cold buds to absorb the heat warpage will be minimal. We both know that I'll be slingin more mud! Denise's hood looks GREAT! I hope mine comes out 1/2 as good. I am learin alot so it is fuckin fun anyhow. Thanks for the kind words guys. I will update soon. FONZI
GREAT job Mike, looks awesome! I'm really looking forward to seeing it on Saturday. Both you guys's metal skills rock!
Latest update...........Got her all welded up and grinded. Now just got to shrnik her up a bit and sling sum filler.
Looking Good FONZI, I wanna come by and take a look in person soon. I'll be doing the same thing to the Fords hood in the very near future.
Looks real good Fonzi.....you have to do some shrinking? Did it give you any trouble?........Ah...the fun part now....spreading and sanding......Neal
Awsome! Whats up Fonzi? The Eddies are still going to Paso. Are we gonna see you guys? Check out what we did last Sunday.-stick
Kustombuilder, can I send you my hood for a peak job.. that came out great. Fonzi.... now that you are done, any tips with your method... I had thought about doing it your way for the same reason, lack of skills to form a peak patch... Question to All.. could I take a bead roller and put a peak into a piece of metal that way and then trim it to the proper width and tack/ weld it on?
i had considered having a die made for a bead roller to roll a peak. maybe someday. as for right now i'm in no hurry to peak another hood. i just finished the metal work on Denise's hood today. let me tell you, peakin a hood is the hardest thing i've EVER done to a car. i've cut cars ten ways from sunday and welded em back together in different configurations and it was'nt nearly as challenging as doin that damn peak. i think i'm gonna have to do Donzie's before i'm done with that car and i am NOT looking forward to it at all!!
