Hello fellas, This has been a delimna for me these past few weeks on how i'm gonna set up the "pedal assembly" on my 1927 T RPU on deuce rails, especially after we pinch the frame. I know it's gonna be a tight in there and it's not gonna be easy I'm running a '39 3 speed behind the flatty as well. I'll also be using a after market 32 X-member made by Ionia hotrods in Michigan. so here's my question(s)? How should i mount my pedals and does anyone know what they used in the 40's for their pedals or does some have a better idea what route i can go with this? ...also do i use a '32 or a '39 pedal assembly to match the tranny? Pictures/photos would help a bunch if ya got 'em So please, post what you or what your buddy did for his ride, thank a bunch in advance! cheers, cab
I used/modified 34 pedals in my frame, but seeing yours is pinched you could so the same and heat and bend the pedals over to a better position towards the rail, but i think an easier solution would be the 39's mounted on the small angle side of the k member so they are closer to the rail, they are neat and have a flat back to mount to your x member, and your m/c is under the floor, much neater IMO. Have you got a pic of how much room you have? Would help.
i am going to use a 32 K member with 32 pedals and a '41 ford sideshift trans. the K member will also allow a recess for better seating position.... people usually sit on model T's rather than in them. id take pictures but nothing is together. what does the Ionia xmember look like? that would dictate which type of ford pedal you will end up using. if there is no room left for Ford pedals you will need to modify to suit your needs... not a big deal, heat and bend. last resort for me would be the over hanging pedals.
I built a T roadster about 8 years ago...It had a 59ab falthead and a 39 Ford gear box...I used a set of 1940 pedals and built a bracket to mount the pedals to the frame...You are right when you say there is not much room. I used a Model A frame then so I know there will be more room with the deuce rails... Mount the steering column first and just space the pedals accordingly. The clutch linkages lined up great. I modifired the model A cross member to hold tranny mounts. If the k-member is just like a factory deuce then you can take the leg of the drivers side and build a bracket for the pedals. Best of luck.
This is what the Ionia 32 x-member looks like, minus the tranny mounts... I was also thinking over hanging pedals, but i wanted to see if anyone had any better ideas or pics, so i can see if there's enough room to add pedals to the floor Human Fly ... i do have some space left in my inbox, you can e-mail a few pics to: cabbie@ix.netcom.com when you get some time, thanks! It would be awesome to see some pics of old Hotrods from the past and see how they did it and what their choice of pedals were used? any guys from the past wanna chime in with a few ideas or options they remember? thanks to all the rest with your ideas, much appreciated! thanks again, cab
Cab, Ionia runs/modifies a Chassis Engineering assembly. Might be worth it to check that out as well. I'm not sure what the CE assembly is based on.
cab - i am running a 37 X member in a set of 32 rails for a different car..... it has 39 pedals.. is yours provisioned for Ford pedals? its been awhile but im pretty sure '40 ford pedals look almost identical to the 39's and they are cheaper.
Brent, Matt (from Ionia) and I discussed this while i put in my order for the X-member about the CE assembly and he wasn't sure either because they haven't done a '32 frame pinched for a 27 T yet. So Matt is just as curious about this as i am, i told them i'd ask the Hamb Rumbler Del, I like your idea as well with the bracket, may have to see how that works too when the time comes. Plan9, not sure but i think they can set it up for Ford pedals if i ask. thanks again fellas, cab
Cab- If you use the 39 pedals without a stock crossmember, be prepared to build one and fight it every inch of the way. I did in my AV8 and it was a complete pain in the ass. Good luck.
I used a set of 52 ford pass. car hanging pedals with a chev. PU duel master cyl. on the outside of the firewall. One for the brakes & the other side for a hyd. clutch assy..It worked great.Your other option is hanging race car reverse pedals mounted off the firewall, but under the cowl. Been there & have done it both ways.
I would buy CE pedals as the angle of the Ionia x member is not the same as a `39 Ford With hanging pedals i would go the '52 ford route and build a clutch linkage!!!! Keep it mechanical!! Use the chevy M/c as a 2-curcuit m/c A 26 T isn't much narrower than a `28-29 in the firewall/cowl area. I think you will be fine. Michael
I have an Ionia pinched '32 frame with the X member. Using a set of '39 pedals. '29 roadster body, so not quite the same. Pictures tell the story below. I had to mount the pedals a little off the angle of the X member to make them straight to the driver. Not the prettiest thing in the world, but it works!! Had to custom fab the clutch pedal arm. Brake pedal arm worked stock.
awesome, this is perfect ...thanks for the pics and info! makes it so much easier to understand when you can actually see the idea and example of how it's being done, nice Thanks again for all your opinions and ideas everyone, i'm soaking in all your views as it's all helping me decide what route to go, so i appreciate the time your all taking to advise me on this, the Hamb rules. grace and peace†, cab
On the touring, I welded the pivot (bolt with smooth shank) to the frame rail and cut a simple 1/4" steel arm with a bushed sleeve. MC was tight to the rail and pointed rearward. Simple and very few parts. An econoline integrated brake/MC is another idea, done a lot in the 60s, was even one in a thread here this week. I also have some F-1 pedals I am going to sell if you want to go that route, mounting is flat not angled like the 39s above.
Michael, Do you have pics of what the CE pedals look like? or anything that's set up with them to see how they would work with the Ionia 32 X-member? thanks, cab
Hi Steve, here is the link. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=255445&highlight=pedal&showall=1 CE doesn`t list it (with clutch pedal)in the catalog but have it. Michael
