People daily-driving on "Antique Auto" plates

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by madgrinder, May 31, 2010.

  1. Here we just run a tag the same year as the car and stick the legal tag under the seat in case you get stopped, all legal, regular insurance, everybody's happy.

  2. My 66 GMC is 100% original except for the bondo and rust & dents. But I run regular tags. I use the heck out of it. pull trailers haul firewood ect.

  3. You wont get away with a antique plate on a hot rod around here. If you do , your luck will run out sooner then later.

in oregon you can register the yom plates and use em. only if the plate is same yesr or newer than the car though, you cant even take 60s plates which use peel and stick year and month tags and put em on your modern vehicle, theyre sticklers about that

Kentucky has a 25 year old restriction on Historic tags. Beginning to see more and more POS daily drivers taking advantage of the provision.

  6. South Carolina laws. HRP

To qualify for an Antique license plate, all of the following must be true:

    • You own a vehicle, automobile, or motorcycle that is at least 25 years old.
    • You use the vehicle only for club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, or similar events.
    • You do not use the vehicle for general transportation.

Limited or concessional registration as known here is very similar to what HRP posted yet many still push the limits and use their cars on occasions outside the conditions as DD. We have the additional ability to 'Road test' with 10mls from home or take car elsewhere (Within reason) for repairs. Registration and insurance is a lot cheaper. No YOM plates here or labels. We're issued with FUGLY 'Special Interest' plates however I use my own approved 'Personalised' plates purchased through our licensing authority. It varies from state to state down here with some states having log books for limited registration cars.

Don't need the potential hassle, the plates aren't that expensive, and being able to hop in anytime and drive anywhere is worth it.

Insurance - how does that work. If the state doesn't want people driving around like that, maybe I'm thinking wrong, but it seems to me don't give the insurance folks a reason to deny a claim

I like the idea of YOM plates though. Iowa hasn't thought to do that yet.

"Exhibits, tours, parades" Sure - anytime we're out driving it's a parade, ain't it? Sorta. People are touring, exhibiting their ride. See how easy that is? And I don't haul around no generals, I was enlisted.

In Washington, you can run YOM plates on a car that is 30 years or older. The restrictions are that you must be going to a show, road testing your car or a special occasion. It's always a special occasion when driving a old car isn't it. :D

The laws might of changed a bit from when this thread was started, but nobody that I know of, runs them in Iowa. Not sure why. @corncobcoupe

  14. In NY, you have to have an insurance card with HISTORICAL printed on it to get historic plates. I know of one guy with an OT Corvette, he has HX plates on it and is limited to 1000 miles a year by his insurance policy. NY state says it shouldn't be used as a DD, but who enforces that? I'd say that the insurance policy would be the restriction.

    • Here is a quote from a Pennsylvania fact sheet:
    • "The use of antique, classic and vintage registration plates is governed by Section 1340 of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, which states: “It is unlawful for any person to operate a motorcycle or vehicle with antique, classic or vintage registration plates for general daily transportation. Permitted use shall be limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses.” Occasional transportation and similar uses are defined as no more than one day a week. "
The thing is, though, nobody knows what day is the one day.

A couple years ago, State Farm told me I had to prove my 55 Chevy was indeed a classic car. They also told me that people were abusing regular and personalized plates on classics using them as daily drivers. If I wanted to continue using my personalized plate, they were going to insure my car as a regular car, jumping the cost to 700 dollars. My choices were to either get historical plates, or a YOM plate. I choose the YOM as I had a nice original in my stash. Not long after I installed the YOM plate, I was pulled over, coming home from a weekly cruise in, by a young local police officer. He said he stopped me because I had the wrong plate on my car. He stated that Michigan didn't currently have a green plate. I told him that the plate matched the year of the car (1955). He then told me it was now 2018. I told him I was aware of what year it was and ask him if he could radio in and ask a senior officer what the correct ruling should be. Several minutes later, he returned my paperwork, and said I could leave. Not even an apology.

  18. Since the law was passed about YOM I have them on my '32 and the '54 and avoid the potential hassle of driving whenever I want too with a antique auto license plate. HRP

I drive one of our old cars to work once in a great while, but I not on a daily basis. Likewise to run errands or just a drive on a nice day. I suppose an officer having a bad day could make my day miserable, but 40+ years of driving antique auto tags, I've never been pulled over or hassled for it. Not acting like a dick behind the wheel may have something to do with that. ;)

I drive my '50 Ford regularly with '50 plates on it. Never had a problem. Same goes with all my old cars over the past 20 years. Even my '58 camper has '58 plates on it. It has a current plate registered to it but I keep that right inside the door in case we get pulled over.

In the 20 years after the Kentucky YOM statute went into effect I've never been hassled while running YOM tags. I think Kentucky Law Enforcement has bigger fish to fry. All in all Kentcky is old car friendly with the best YOM Statute in the country.

More than the average person would realize. The other half of the equation is that more people talk themselves into a ticket than talk themselves out of one.

Most 35 year old farm trucks around here run antique tags but they are only good for 16 thousand pounds

    I resemble that remark.

As sunbeam said you can do about anything in Kansas as long as it is stock. A group has been stopped for running aftermarket wheels with an antique tag. Modifications are to be made for safety only..

I am under the impression that the Pennsylvania police are selective regarding antique plates. Driving a Model A after dark vs driving an "antique" 1995 Ford with fairly modern safety features is a big difference. I'd be more concerned about what your antique car insurance policy says,if you need it.My insurance coverage is the same as on my DD: 100K/300K, full tort, stacked coverages. My antique and street rods also have guaranteed values.

The point is to let people know what year the car is when they look at it most people have no clue when they are cruising a car show
