  2. I agree, 57. AND names and terminology change with the years. What is called a " Hot Rod " today was called a "custom" or the dreaded "street Rod " back in the '50s. Maybe regions, too.

I don't think I would respond to someone with RATROD in their name.

  4. I've tried. I have no doubt that's the major reason and kick myself many times over for choosing what I did. My idea of a rat rod is a non painted hot rod. I didn't realize at the time the negative connotation it would hold. I'll try again and see if I can get it changed. Thank you.

  5. Why? I wouldn’t go up to a golfer and make statements or use terms about it that I don’t know or understand.

I build high end sports equipment for a living football goal post (high school, college N.C.A.A. and N.F.L.) soccer goals, track and field etc….because of these it doesn’t mean I am an expert on the games themselves.
In fact, I know nothing about them and have no interest in learning and make no effort to talk about in fact I go out of my way to avoid them!

However, people who know nothing about cars or racing feel the need to discuss them.

Earlier in the week several people in the break room at work were discussing Stewart Friesen NASCAR Craftsman Truck series and D.I.R.T Modified drivers Modified crash. Not a single one of them has been to a race of any kind. They were making the statement that his was Truck owner shouldn't have let him race dirt.

They just looked in bewilderment when I told them that the same person owned his Craftsman Truck series and D.I.R.T Modified, and the Friesen himself was part owner in the team and the. Or that Modified came first racing and that is how he makes living and that those races pay as much or in some cases more than a Truck series race, the Fonda 200 (at Stewart Friesen home track) pays $53,000 to win!

Hey all, don’t take stuff so seriously. Unless they’re being an ass, try to remember they may just be curious and trying to learn something. Even a ? Like why a Chevy engine in a Ford may be innocent. I damn sure don’t know every make, model…… etc. I do ask questions of people’s cars, I usually get a good answer and learn something also. We have quite a few walking encyclopedia people on site, I’ve asked a few of them what might be considered dumb questions , I’ve always received honest and civil answers. Man this is how we learn.
We sure can’t fix stupid or asswipe people, let their BS roll off your back.
Don’t give these dips free rent in your head.
A good friends standard response to stupid or harsh statements and questions is Hmmphhh.
    It works

That’s a fair point and I can understand but maybe some people who don’t know engage “us” in order to learn or because they are curious but not wanting to immerse themselves in the culture. Different viewpoints is all, I just don’t let it bother me much.

Now people who are self proclaimed experts and just try to impress everyone while constantly seeking validation, that bothers me.

i understand how people can creep right up your exhaust pipes. listen, man, i had a friend who had a coupe just like yours, a 1932 deuce he called it. they even wrote a song about it once. ronny & the daytonas sang it.

like yours, it was chopped and it was red with fenders and normal street legal tires so he could go anywhere - right through mud puddles if he wanted.

but other than that, if you parked these two cars side by each, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

i went to a presentation about small farm gardens and their immeasurable value to the community at the local library this spring.

the presenter was showing some successful gardens in the area and one slide showed this rather large fellow who was responsible for the day to day running of the property. he wore a shirt on which was printed:

"You've said Hello. that's enough for one day."

  18. I was in the middle east driving through the desert and came across a herd of camels and their herders. I stopped and one of the camels came over to my vehicle and stuck her head in close enough to give me a kiss. I said kind of under my breath, I hope she doesn't spit on me! My NCO and I had some really good laughs about camel spit after that!

I’ve found that the majority of people just not know better. That includes to the so-called experts. Really don’t know the reason other than they might just want to fit in. I tend to be cordial, nod my head and pretty much ignore things that they say.

  20. In my 53 years on this planet I’ve learned that sometimes in life there’s always someone who just doesn’t understand the difference between a hot rod and a street rod ( yes, I do own a street rod but it’s been built on a budget) .

what did Marshall Raylan Givens say?

if you meet an idiot, you met an idiot.

but if you're always meeting idiots, maybe you're the idiot.

    or something to the effect.

I asked a guy at the parts store the other day if he had "Brass Nipples." I'm in my mid-40's and he was quite a bit older than me. He looked at me like I am a pervert until I asked "Do you know what a nipple is?" He then said "no." and I got to teach the guy about his parts he was selling.

I have lost a TON of patience in the last 5-8 years. I don't get angry, I just find myself becoming MUCH MORE reclusive.

I read most of these posts and I may have missed it, but the one that gets me is the guy telling you about a car that he used to have, usually a huge boat of a car with a two barrel carb! Then he will tell you how fast it was, like 11 seconds in the quarter mile. And how it outran every car he ran and nobody ever beat him!

Here is one more for the pile. Over the years I have tried to forget, it maybe this will help.
I had my first of many Olds in the bay of my part time gas station.
One of the mechanics buddy's who was the fry cook at a bar, was admiring the engine.
I explained to him that the crank in this model year had a steel crankshaft, and that later years were given cast iron cranks.
He agreed that was not as good given that when driving in rain splashing water might crack it:eek::confused:

Yeah, I remember a guy who had a '66 Oldsmobile 98 that he claimed no one in the city where he lived (with a population of around 100,000) could outrun.
