IMG_20150421_184928.jpg IMG_20150421_184846.jpg I'm looking for ideas on getting some super stuck 40 deluxe perch bolts off. I got the nut off one but the other only has half a nut left on it due to serious rust. How do I get the good one off without destroying it and is the other too messed up? Should I try soaking them in something? Heat and beat (gently)? If I have to beat them out how do I save the threads? The king pins were a pain to get out and I'm thinking these will be just as hard. Many threads on the subject if you do a search. There is one about a home made tool, will see if I can find it.

I did not find that one when I searched. Thanks for that.

Any ideas on getting that other nut off?

  5. Odds of using that perch again is pretty thin. If I were doing it I'd drill the shank out of the nut. If I used heat on the axle I wouldn't use a press or hammer to drive out what's left. A slide hammer or puller set up like in photos on other link. You start beating or pushing on it and there is a good chance you'll just make a large Rivet out of the shank.

I've actually removed worse looking Ford nuts successfully, so I'd try...if it works, you may have saved the perch.
    1. Put on big vise grip adjusted to KILL. See if sufficient violence will turn it. You may be surprised, as I have been with several such situations.
    2. If no go...drill down through nut at one of the castellation slots. Down as in parallel with perch bolt. Follow at hole by driving a sharp cold chisel in, down and then sideways. A sideways attack with chisel on other side of nut will also tend to open and relax it.

I'll give that a try Bruce. There is still remnants of a cotter pin in it that can make turning it harder. I figured I'll need to trim it back tight to the threads.
