Perfect Circle- Doctor of Motors Certificate

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by gasserlouie, Aug 14, 2010.

  1. Hey guys. How many of you remember auto shop class in high school? I remember watching a really old Perfect Circle piston ring film in black and white, around 1973. When we finished watching the film we were given a short test and if you passed the test you were given or mailed a certificate stating you were a "Doctor of motors" with the perfect circle logo at the top of the certificate. Being 15 years old at the time I thought I was really something when I recieved this certificate! I no longer have the certificate but would love to see one posted on here if you have one. If you remember this film or test, post up your story or approximately the year you took it. That film had to be from the 1950's in my opinion.

  4. Many years back in the small town I grew up in we had a old mechanic that had been at the engine rebuilding game forever. He had a Perfect Circle Doctor Of Motors clock hanging on the wall in his shop. It was like the Holy Cross of the shop. If the light bulb would burn out in the clock all work would come to a halt. I would love to have that clock >>>>.

I remember the film in Auto Information class, but don't think I applied for the Doctor of Motors sheepskin.

  6. Well now you went and done it Bruce. How is anybody going to top that story. Hell, that film must have been older than i thought! Let me know when and we can go secure that old clock to a suitable museum, like my place?

  7. Perfect Circle had some neat promotion deals. Now how many of you guys remember saving the box top flaps from the TRW-Ramco Piston Ring boxes for promotions ?? >>>>.

I've got one of those somewhere, took the test in 71. The program started back in the early 50's if I recall correctly.

I was just talking with a buddy about this program yesterday. If you passed the test you got a cool pin with the Doctor of Motors logo on it. Needless to say he wound up failing but years later bought the pin at Carlisle.

What a coincidence. I just ran across mine cleaning up my parents estate last month.

I had totally forgotten that such a thing existed until I opened the envelope. I need to frame it and put it up a work.

Yep I got a phd. Says so right there.

    Got mine in '65....

  26. I still have the pin that belonged to my Dad. If I recall correctly it had a threaded stud on the back with a spin-on clasp. He used to wear it on his belt. I'll try to dig it out tonite and post a pic.

I graduated from high school in 1960, but my Dr. of Motors paper was about two years later. It should be here somewhere, when I croak the kids will find it.

  28. Found it! Just as I remembered. Also found his "Select Nash Dealer" pin and a funky little Champion Spark Plug. No idea what that was for. Maybe a charm for a bracelet?????????
My Dad was a parts man at a Massey Harris/International Truck/Nash dealer right after my parents were married. These things have to be pre-1958 because he left the dealership then and went into the insurance business. I also still have some of the Massey tractors he got me for Christmas, birthdays, etc.
