Each of us probably has our favorite...

Mine is the late '30s Talbot Lago 'Goutte d'Eau' ('Drop of Water') coupe. Photos don't ever do these cars justice - you have to see one for real to appreciate the proportions.

These are all good examples. That '31 Chevy is a masterpiece for sure, and not just because it doesnt have and Ford parts on it! I completely agree that not everything should be chopped, sometimes it actually makes a car look more out of proportion. Speaking, of mercs In my opinion they ALWAYS look better without skirts.

not believing the level of chop some call "good proportions" ... on some cars it can work but only when the rest of the car flows .. otherwise henry wasnt too far off on his cars .. niether was chevy or anyone else .. a nice 2-3" chop will always outclass a slammed pancake roof rat mobile regardless of how nice they try to make it

  14. Blue Danube is a clone.

The stock Merc is gorgeous but the 69 Camaro stance throws the proportions off. Also it's not stock anymore when the front is slammed.

All this so far and no picture of the Niekamp car or any of the other early Roadster Show tropy winners, Jake's 34 with 37 Pickup grille, and Pete's California Kid?

You have great taste! I'd add the E-Type Jag as well and these:

Just my preference, but I prefer the earlier Auburn Speedsters over the later.

What the hell is that thing in the top left corner of the picture with the nomad vette? I wouldn't call the proportions great but I still like it. Anybody know? Looks to be old Oldsmobile-ish descent.

Maybe not the best example, but I love a '57 hardtop with flames and a rake. Not sure about the pro street meats on this one, but you get the idea.

I think that this thread is only proof that proportions are often defined by the eye of the beholder...

I'll also say, that a lot of times I feel like some cars look pretty bad ass when they're OUT of proportion, depending on how and where they are out of proportion.

But wait... would that just mean that it's IN proportion, if we follow the "eye of the beholder's" view? Hmmm...

Lets not get this thread closed by posting pics of Billet rides and fighting over them. The proportions of the body on that thing are cancelled out by the lack of taste in the wheels and tires and all the other crap bolted to it. I can appreciate other people's work but that doesnt mean i have to agree with their style. Also, I think the roof on that car is awful looking.

The European exotics have appeal, but they don't say 'hot rod' do they.

Damn! i wanted to find a pic of 'Stripers' modified and post it - it's got proportions.

A lot of the euro stuff back in the day had some good lines. We had a 65 Maserati at work when I was doing restoration, which I always thought was a nice looking car. (It got in wreck with a 41 Olds, ouch!) My aunt used to have a few of the Volvo p1800's, they are nice little cars and well built. The 61-69 Lincolns keep coming up, they are so gorgeous. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the gull wing Mercedes.

  29. Those euro cars look like the car that Ace and Gary the ambiguously gay duo drive.
