I was wondering if you can hook up the pertronics to straight 12 volts. Can you bypass the resister?

I run Petronics in 2 of my units. Mine are hooked up right to 12V. I think the directions tell you but I am not sure to use straight 12v. It helps if you use a Petronics coil also.

Did he Pertronics deal in my '57. Ignitor 2 and a second strike box. Straight 12v. Resistors are only used to save breaker points while running.

What he said. I also agree that you should use their coil. I made the mistake of hooking one up with an MSD Ignitor II coil and fried the box. They apparently don't like a super hot coil.

no resistor for that system. You can use a differant coil but you have to be careful of the primary resistance. I have the original Pertronix and bought there coil with it and it fried in 300 miles. That uses a 1.5 resistance and the Accel superestock coil is 1.2. According to Pertronix there wouldn't be any problem but 1.2 was on the bottom of their scale. It's been in there now for 2 years without any problems

Thanks guys. The directions showed how to hook up with and without the ballast resister.

Just got back frombypassing the resister and.......... DAMN, that is the ticket. Now that is what I am talking about!

    Thanks for the input..

just a note here guys... i burned up 2 Pertronics before finding out you never leave your key on without engine running...they don't tell you that in any of their literature...(car was warming up in d/way and died#1~turned key on to see if burned out bulb or flasher was bad#2)..Now the Pertronics II has a protection in the system so they won't do that. I run a 250 6 cyl and the engine really woke up with the pertr...but if i ever lose another it's getting HEI, as parts are available anywhere ...and yes...12V it

I use a Pertronix Ignitor with an MSD coil and without the resistor. No problems in 10 years.

I have also accidently left the key on, long enough to kill the battery, without damaging the Pertronix unit. If and when it dies, I will replace it with another one. Don't think they have an HEI for a 371 Olds yet.

I remember reading some Pertronix instructions saying not to leave the key on for extended periods of time. I have the systems in 3 FE Fords and one SBC. No problems yet.
