The stock flathead distributor leaves a lot to be desired. Change the whole thing or stick with points. Ten years ago, Pertronix was made in the USA and they were wonderful. Now, they are made in China. I bought one this year and it was toast in a week. I'll keep the points in the old Y block for a while

I've had poor luck with Pertronix conversions, too. My Pertronix ignition module failed in the middle of 5 o'clock rush hour traffic - and I was in the left lane. When it quits, it quits. No warning at all.

Got the car off to the side, figured out what was wrong. Called several auto parts stores in the area, but none of 'em stocked the module. They could order it...

On mine you've got to pull the distributor to change it back to points and as I recall you've got to replace one part that is deleted during the conversion. The auto parts stores had the points and condenser, but the other little part...? Nope, but they could order it...

One very expensive roll-back ride later I chucked the converted distributor in the trash and replaced it with an aftermarket HEI (mine's a Chevy motor) and ended all the problems. I keep a spare ignition module and connector in my glovebox. Both can be installed without pulling the distributor or affecting the timing.

My advice? Keep the points. You'll gain nothing by the conversion except an empty wallet. Good luck!
