    Part 3
    Got drafted.
After the February '71 "Mid Winter Rod Run" I took the car down to paint it.
Now, so you know, this was a "driving" restoration.
I only took it down for short periods of time and did things as quick as I could because this was my transportation car. I would strip and prime a few panels at a time while still driving it.
Eventually the hood, grill shell & fenders came off.
The body was pretty nice so it didn't take long to get it ready for paint.
Got the body painted and I drove it a little with no fenders.
While I was getting the fenders ready for paint, in mid May, I got my draft notice.
I had 10 days to get things in order before I had to leave.
The fenders got a quick gray primer job and the car got put back together.
My dad offered to find a place to store the car, but he said my pile of deuce parts in our back yard had to go. I called around to my friends to unload the stuff I had.
I had several '32 frames, they went for 15 bucks a piece.
The end of May, on Memorial Weekend, I shipped out to Ft. Ord.
Here's pictures of the car going back together, and one more when I was home after finishing Infantry training.
    Stay tuned for part 4

I had the pleasure of being a "guest" of Uncle Sam at Fort Ord in September 1971. Reported the same day that all my buddies started class back at JC. Remember the wind doesn't blow at Fort Ord, it sucks.

Ah the days when a guy could "throw together" a Deuce Coupe in a couple months from a bunch of parts!

  29. My buddy Tim sent me these photos of Pete's 3 window. I just got a chance to scan them and upload them. @timwhit

According to Tim the first picture is of Pete getting back in the car and Tracy Taylor, a Springfield Ohio guy to his right. He had a chopped black '34 5-window. Lobeck is riding with Pete.

The next picture is Tim's sedan next to Pete's car.

These were taken on Tim's way home from Gatlinburg in 1976.

    Thanks!

I did basic at Ft Polk but AIT was at Fort Ord. I would see the guys in basic running in the sand. Sure liked Ft Polk better after seeing that. Thanks for the story Pete.
