So they said on TV that the car ran fuel with "a little hydrazine". That's hellacious stuff. Do any of you historians know if Gates would have actually done that?

As I recall, many drivers used hydrazine back then. I know Nicholson did. It's a Class A explosive. NHRA banned it pretty quickly, as I remember.

  8. I remember the first time I saw John Peters fright train run it was like being born and seeing the first time, or seeing wild willy driving one handed being young is kool but the things we seen in the 60s is worth the pain of getting old.

pretty disgusting the way the speed channel told history of the build up of car.FACTS were all wrong, they left the man out who found car and OWNED car.Potato farmers were the partner, never spent time looking for car as stated.Daryl Huffman found body first then found chassis, allin about 93.Steve,the pinhead for details on coding cars, could not get anything right,OH yes,the furniture store was in wayne,mi.not chicago,STEVIE BOY

I watched the sale also. Beautiful car. There was a guy at the mike giving info about the car and the dumbass "expert" announcers for the speed channel talked over him. Assholes. That 160k sounded like a deal for one of the first funnies with sohc.

A lot of good information was missed, while these guys were talking over the commentary. I sent them an e-mail bi**hing about it. They think they're a bunch of know it all mofos that don't know squat. They should just STFU!

I've been following Daryls resto on the car for a few years.I couldn't believe they never mentioned he was the owner.

I'll agree that it would be a hell of a lot better show if they would just shut the hell up about 3/4 of the time and turn the mikes on the guy on the stage actually doing the talking or just let you hear the bidding.

Way too much of the "I'm paid to comment so I need to comment" stuff. But as for miss information. You have to nail who ever wrote their notes for them on that. Plus as we all know, if you want to run into bullshit artists just go to any car event and they will come out of the woodwork to spew wrong info on it. How many times have any of us been at a rod trot checking out (fill in the blank)'s old rod and had some guy we have never seen before tell us that he built the whole thing in his home garage last winter.

They did do a nice job on that car when they restored or over restored it and I'd love to see it bust off at an event somewhere in the future.

Jody, and anyone else familiar with Pete Gates cars.I have seen some photos of the flip top Comet with a 67 grill badly mounted over the 66.Did Pete actually get a 67?I was at the 04 Reunion in Oklahoma and got to hear some great, but scary, stories told by Hubert Platt and some others on the use of hydrazine!! I agree on the BJ coverage, wish they would turn down the auctioneers mike,I use the "mute" button alot!! ROY

MEMBERS,just talked to Daryl, seller of the GATE JOB.Steve Menyontau spoke directly to Daryl on history of car and it's details,When&where he found car and chassis, history of its drag racing past and how the car came about.Steve chose to tell a story of misconception that the TOMATO FARMER'S searched for this car.He knew Daryl had car, offered to be partner in reconstruction for BJ.I emailed steve for a reply,I ask members to email speedtv/barrettjackson to help get reply.Yes Roy Pete got a 67 car, painted red with silver stripe and lettureing. To my knowledge car is a MIS.

Beautiful job on that resto. If i was a rich mook i'd be owning that now.

Didn't Dee Keaton also have a 66 flip top Comet?

Nicholson, Shartman, Gates, Kenz & Leslie, Chrisman, Keaton are 6.
How many 67's? There was a Canadian one in Toronto.

  18. Speaking of BS, how do you figure it had the first automatic?

  19. The copy on all the cars the announcer on the block and SPEED's Varsha & Joy were using was one and the same. You didn't miss anything by them talking at the same time. For those who want to bitch to someone, point it toward the B/J staff who condenses the info the sellers provide into a 30 second blurb.

not true Rich when it comes to the PREMIER cars.First mistake of SPEED TV,WED.MIKE JOY said car was first funny car EVER.He was corrected by many on email.FACT,Steve from SPEED TV along with awoman from network interviewed Daryl about entire story of car.Steve ADLIBED story on PETE GATES,I do not feel he knows anything about early A/FX and funny car.I think he loves to think he knows it all,it ain't there.BJ read the write up on car,Daryl provided.Network on most cars is using the Q cards provided by BJ.

  21. Your wrong, Steve is very knowledgeable on A/FX and funny cars. He may have made errors in this case but to say he doesn't know the cars is wrong. Have you ever met him or even talked to him? Granted the rest of the TV crew aren't into drag racing history but Steve Magnante is.

Try standing on that stage for 10 hours, describing hundreds of assorted types of cars and get every fact correct while the TV producers are talking in your ear. Errors happen. I'm not a huge fan of the Barrett Jackson circus but Steve Magnante isn't the problem...

Troublemaker 427,you are right I was far too harsh about Steve Mangnate's knowledge on drag cars I apologize,BUT it is hard to see your best friend work for years on the history and restoration of his dream GATE JOB,and when the time comes to shine or be proud on NETWORK TV,OH WELL,MISTAKE MADE.I don't know how it happened,it just did.Have I ever met steve and talked to him,NO as for 10 hours on the stage,I'm sure he is paid well.
