Guys I have a new Mallory dual point for my 8BA and although it is brand new and looks the piece, the consensus around the traps is that they are SHIT !! Crap points, condensors and poor quality are the ususal complaints as well as too much timing for a Flathead (which I can fix easily enuff). Now, being a Mopar man Ive always played with Mopar Electronic igns (street and race) and have had great results, so Im leaning to an elec conversion. My questions are... Will the Petronix drop into my Mallory and replace the points? Do Petroxic have one of these for a points conversion to elec for the MaAllory ? Any of u guys done this before and can pass on some tips? Being Down Under...where can I score one in CALI ? Any info would be great ....thanx !! Rat
. If you like the Chrysler system, convert it to Crysler. I've run this system for 7 years without a hic-cup. I run a generator and solid core red wires, both a no-no according to the "experts". This is the old style Mallory dual point. Click here for the article discribing the proceedure.
i am in the same boat w/ a SBC (shut it) do i order for the dist. or the motor? its a smaller dist. than the stock so i am not sure how to proceed either.
Tommy thats the other idea that came into my mind !! Swapping the Mopar electronic plate, pickup and reluctor into the Mallory housing. I imagine id have to turn down or sleeve the Flatty shaft under the cap to get the reluctor to fit the shaft. I think i might try this - I know the Mopar distributor has been turned down a modded to suit the Flathead in the past, but Im not sure that just the Electronic guts have been fitted into a late dual point Malliry before. What housing are you using in that pic? Thanx... Rat What distributor housing is that in the pic?
You grind down the points cam for a snug fit into the Chrysler reluctor and then "lock tite" it after it's phased with the rotor button. The early rotor button required the pickup to be lowered for clearance. Check for clearance before you get too far along. I'm looking for a Studebaker V8 dizzy to convert for my P/U.
yo,tommy check out pullapart.com the conley location, and do a search on studebaker. they had some old ones over there when last i was there. if they show one,i will do a visual next time i am there(possibly this weekend),and check their pricelist as well. if they have one,i'll snatch it fer ya',you pay what the pricelist says, plus shipping. sound ok? lemme know. later
RB I have a newer mallory Dual point for my FE and to my knowlege Petronix doesn't make a conversion for the new distributers. I could be wrong. I like my Mallory but I have had trouble keeping the points in adjustment with mine. Haven't have any other problems though. I usually have to rough the bottom of the new points up a little before I put them in. I do like the petronix stuff though. Im converting the points dizzy to petronix in my '65 chevy. PM me the numbers off your new distributer and I'll call a friend if you want and see if Petronix has a set up available for your dizzy. The PKnBner
This guy will convert older Mallory distribs: http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/ I do not think Pertronix makes kits for the old Mallorys
Big Jim I've found them to convert the YL but not for the newer dual point. At least that's what I was able to find out when I was tired of adjusting points in my FE. I never bothered calling Petronix direct.
