Photo size

Discussion in 'Questions & Suggestions' started by 46international, May 29, 2024.

  1. Just about every day I read a thread in where someone asks the poster to "click the large photo button". I was wondering, is there a way to make the larger photo the default size. It may be a good idea to leave the small photo option for times that it may be needed but most of the time the larger the better.
    Just a thought.

    Hello,

If one looks at the photos copied and posted onto any of the forum threads, most are out of focus. The copy/paste procedure is simple and easy to use. But, when posted, it takes on the aspects of the original photo. So, if the photo has been taken with a high MP digital camera, a copy and paste starts the process. The larger the original photo, the larger the copy and paste. But, the receiving end, HAMB post accepts it larger and usually out of focus.

Even the old B/W copied vintage photos with their old style cameras, are now copied and posted without any adjustments. Some cropping will help, but just overall, the size makes the photo grainy and usually out of focus. Yes, some will say that it is an old photo and most were out of focus, given the equipment and times. So, yes, that is true. But, when we copy an old photo, at least resize it so it is not blurry. That means making the original image smaller, which in turn, makes it as clear as possible without going into the old photo with a computer photo program. Those are used to clear up various faults and company add on logos that were not on when the original photo was taken.

No one has complained as to the large old photo postings. But, if they were resized by the person posting them, we might get to see how it was clear at the original photo shoot and not twice or larger in size as the current posting is for size. Most people in those old days did not print photos as enlargements as shown on the current copy and paste photo process on almost every forum or thread.

If one takes a normal 35mm color film size and saves it to their own files, it is preserved. But, sometimes, when you copy it and post it on a thread, the original specs come into play and one might have to adjust them to make sure they are not out of focus or somewhat blurry that comes with the larger size.

Our dad shot in his old 4x5 camera with the film negative provided. But when the prints came back, they had the ability to go rather large from the larger negative. 95 % of the photos were handheld 3x5 or 4x6 prints or the standard photo proof sheets that printed as many 4x5 negatives as could be placed on one 8 x 10 photo paper.

Some still came out somewhat blurry, but that was the 4x5 camera's sensitivity to "hand held" aspect. It was not a lightweight camera and they were used primarily with flash attachments and tri pods. No “Kodak Brownie” point and shoot aspect. A set up photo array and take a series of photos to make sure at least one came out clear for usage was usually the norm.

So, what is the answer. Well, for one, resize the original photo. Two, it is not bad to crop the extra sky or ground out of the photo. If the old hot rod or car is the main emphasis then some trimming is ok. We have all seen the original photos that were centered, but useless since the surrounding aspects of the photo took over the whole frame and the subject is small. So, in order to get a larger subject, the original post of the photo was enlarged and from that post, many times it has been copied and reposted as per larger photo, with each time getting fuzzier. upload_2024-5-30_10-48-37.png This is an original 35mm color slide, not Kodak Ektachrome, but an experimental 35mm film strip. The size copied and saved to my own files looks good as shown on my computer. But, when I copy and paste it to show the photo, it automatically enlarges itself to this size. Making it somewhat fuzzy as it gets larger.
upload_2024-5-30_10-49-52.png A copy of the photo slide is used and directly posted to this thread makes it automatically this large. Then, it becomes fuzzier than the original in focus slide. It is just not as clear as the original color slide film transparency.

If I use the "upload a file" portion of the HAMB thread, this is the result. So, it is still somewhat in focus and the idea of the hot rod still gets across, but it is not enlarged to the point of being so fuzzy from a normal size 35 mm color slide.

And, it is harder to place directly into a series of paragraphs of the typed story. It is used just for an add on accessory to highlight the whole story with a photo or two at the end.

For the majority of photos posted, I still use the simple Word Document as a base and start my paragraph writing first. Then add the photos as per necessary to showcase the writing. Copy and paste is simple, but adjustable to fit the story and not overpower the story with fuzzy photos.

It is old school, but almost effortless to use the adjustable paste photo aspect of the Word Document. It is a trial and error practice until the whole story is finished. Then, it is ready to copy and paste as per topic or HAMB thread. It is not just a rush to get a dozen photos from the web to copy and paste without any history or facts to go along with the photo(s) YRMV
