"Shows Arthur Wylie setting a new record of 29.47 seconds in the 1940 Rob Roy Hill Climb. He is wearing a crash helmet, unusual for the period. The 1940 Wylie car, no. 51 in the photograph, was powered by a Ford Model A engine. Later owners/drivers of the car were Mr Mischa Ravdell and Mr Murray Rainey."

"An international telegraph link between Australia and Britain existed as far back as 1872, with the cable travelling through Singapore, India, Suez and Gibraltar. There were concerns about the high cost of this service as well as vulnerability of the cable in the event of war. For these reasons, it was proposed to lay another cable from Britain through Canada and across the Pacific Ocean to Australia, all via British Commonwealth land points. This was commenced in 1901, and was completed in 1902. Here is a picture of a crowd attending the event of the cable coming ashore at Southport in Queensland in 1902."

The cable was used until 1962.

This week's quiz is formatted differently which I hope will encourage more responses (even blind guesses this time). Which of these vehicles was not manufactured in Massachusetts? No disrespect to Detroit, I thought this would highlight how some great vehicles rolled out of some Mass. factories in the early 20th century. Extra credit for identifying the makes shown. Please send me your answers by PM (do not post!), by Tuesday evening, and good luck.

This is a Vought VE-7 biplane being started by a modified Ford Model T in 1926. The mechanism is known as a Hucks Starter.
