History Photos taken before WW2 - history in black and white

  1. I was looking at Stevens-Duryea pictures to try to sort out that mystery car with the front-mounted tierod and found this one - http://www.svvs.org/genpics8/1905_Stevens-Duryea_Tourer.jpg - which led me back to my copy of the Standard Catalog. It seems that S-D used that Mercedes shape radiator for 1905 but went to a flat top one in '06 and '07 and then back to the Mercedes shape from '08 on. Which all leads me to think that this car is a 1906 Stevens-Duryea Model R 20hp on the 90" wb.

A beautiful 1927 Chevrolet that probably belongs on the "What does Hot Rod mean to you" thread but it was not called a Hot Rod back then. It was a "Bug". I don't think it was called a "Speedster" at the time either. At least this is what old timers told me when I was a small boy before WWII. I didn't hear the expression "Hot Rod" until after WWII but that car is one.

I'm looking at the hand crank location on the CDO and Haynes Apperson, and got a CDO owner to agree it isn't one.

The signs are as interesting as the truck. What do you suppose the aviator girls were about?

Tonight I'll post some Robert Roof Chevrolet race car photos, I think the cut down may be connected to him. [IMG]

This was THE place to take your steam car for boiler work. Check what the shop owner has for transportation, standing in the shade at right.

What I neglected to add before was that the some of the American Mercedes that were built by Steinway Panio Co had this front end style that I have seen. I also have a photo which clearly shows it on a different car but I cannot find it at the moment. I believe that they may have been trying it for a time and went back to the conventional style with the tie rod behind the axle as most of them had before and after.

I will look for another photo but this second but poor photo shows the typical Mercedes line up of adjustable drip feed oilers at the top of the dash.

Thats a good point Bob and one I had not thought about before. The top photo clearly shows the crank above the box on the running board in the same location as the second photo. The Haynes photo shows it on the other side of the car.

Do you or anyone elso have any clear Haynes photos?? I will keep looking for more but they are hard to come by.

Just another poorly lit garage, but they do have some interesting projects.

From the background, this looks like a coastal setting. These guys in the Renault seem to be getting some air, with an unusual way of folding back the top, but at slow enough speeds I guess this works.

  29. Interesting to see the price quoted at $1095 - I can't read the small print around it. I guess it is the on the road price whereas the usually quoted $985 in most books if FOB? I wonder if this one sold as an Erskine or was one of the ones that was rebadged as a Studebaker mid season. I believe only about 12 1930 Erskines came to NZ. A friend of mine has a two door sedan which was not sold until the following year and was repainted a different colour (from black with red pin stripes to a blue/green) to suit the first owner. Many cars were slow to sell in 1930. I know of a 1930 buick that was sold new here in 1934. For many makes there were no, or very few, imports to NZ for 1932 or 1933.

  30. I haven't worked out what this one is yet but it looks to be something reasonably expensive from the accessory front bumper. Date late 1920s with front wheel brakes and smaller wheels - maybe even 18" or 19"??
