That would be Lake Erie in the background, Buffalo is on the shore of Lake Erie where it funnels into the Niagara River towards Niagara Falls, and then to Lake Ontario. One of the reasons Buffalo was on the verge of being a major player in the automobile Industry. a major railroad hub, a port on the Great lakes, and a bridge across the Niagara river to Canada.

By the turn of the century, the Erie Canal was still there, but not a big transport mode by then. But it played a huge prt in the development of Buffalo.

Buffalo had a lot of auto manufacturers besides Babcock. But the depression, and various other factors killed it.

And note the household wiring of the era going to the rectifier?????
Wires on insulators, separated for positive and negative.
My son's house actually has some of that wiring still live in the basement!!!!

One reason for success of electric vehicles in Buffalo was that it was a leader in Electric power for households.
We take that for granted now.

Well, it's a darn good thing folks listened to Tesla instead of Edison on this one!

My house and garage still have a lot of that, although not so much as a month ago. It's not a bad system, but after 70-120 years the insulation tends to be a bit crispy, and it's typically not up to modern amperage demands.

  22. There is a (small) picture in The Standard Catalog of a Union but it looks just like the Auburn picture you posted, so whether it is correct I have no idea. The Union was priced at $895 vs about $1300+ for an Auburn.

THANKS, LGS! Now, HERE is a real puzzler, at least for ME!
The car above is ID'd as a Hunt (not Hunter nor Huntington).
From this angle and the disc wheels, it looks like early '20s to me.
    Thoughts, anybody?

From what I've been able to find, just ONE (one-of-a-kind) Hunt exists
-- a 1910 Hunt Special, made in California by two mechanic brothers
    named Hunt.

The above car can't be the 1910 Hunt, as it's a coupe, unlike the open
Hunt Special. So, I guess the QUESTION is: WHAT IS THIS CAR, REALLY??
(BTW, this pic is for sale by "Forgotten Images," a regular on eBay, special-
izing in printing hundreds of different vintage pix for folks to put on their
walls. Not a commercial, but I borrowed their photo, so I thought it fair to
    provide attribution.)

    ^^^^^ #7102

Now that's something I've never seen before.

That's what is great about this thread - always something interesting. Ok, nothing to do with Hot Rods, but certainly displaying mechanical ingenuity.

Also, why sweat about the odd pic that slips in post war?? As long as it was posted in good faith, it's all good interesting stuff. If the poster thinks it's pre war, and it later proves not to be, why worry? No need to start deleting things IN MY OPINION.

This is a great thread - one of my favourites.

Thanks to all that have posted on it.

    Mart.

#7104, Jimi I'd say it looks more like a 1920 Hunter made in Harrisburg,Pa. then a 1910 Hunt. My '24 DB looks VERY much like this, definately not old enough for 1910.

  26. That coupe in #7104 looks to late in styling to be 1920. I would say more like 1923-24 because of the drum lights and the general body styling. The Standard Catalog says that maybe only a prototype was built of the 1920 Hunter - no idea what it looked like though, but I doubt it would have been a coupe.
