  2. Looks to be a 1917 D45 on the left and a 1919 H45 on the right.

    LGS, you're good, man! Wow.

Now, is that car the oriental folks have there a Packard? Didn't ring so to me, due to the narrowing at top. But I can't place it for sure.

  4. It is a Buick - 1928 was the only year they used that hood ornament.

Conceived and built in 1930 by the German rail company Deutsche Reichsbahn, the Schienenzeppelin was a design alternative to the streamlined steam locomotives of its day. It was a slippery, lightweight construction at 20 tonnes, running on but two axles, powered by a 46 liter BMW V12 which was later used to power the light bombers of the Luftwaffe. The engine’s 600 horsepower were channeled into a massive ash propeller, tilted at a 7˚ angle to produce downforce. It was one of those designs that would shock and delight even in these times, when aluminum is used not for Bauhaus trains but for high-revving V8’s. Originally good for 120 mph—comparable to the fastest streamlined steam locomotives—the Schienenzeppelin topped out at a magnificent 140 mph in the summer of 1931, a speed record which stood for 23 years and which has never been surpassed by a gasoline-powered locomotive. Unfortunately, the train never made it into production. Problems with propeller safety and reliability prevented it from attaining mass production and the speed record prototype was dismantled in 1939, on the eve of World War II.

    Japanese War Tubas

Pre-World War II photograph of Japanese Emperor Hirohito inspecting an array of acoustic locators, which were used prior to the invention of radar to locate aircraft. Their precise origin is unknown.

In the early 1900s some rather crazy-looking armored vehicles were used by the military; here is a “Sizaire-Berwick Wind Wagon” from 1900.

Using a US 5 ton truck chassis, the Admiralty Air Department of the Royal Navy designed a heavy armored car that was intended to back up the machine gun armed vehicles that had been deployed to Belgium at the start of WW1. The vehicle had more of the appearance of a land based patrol boat than that of an armored car.

The car weighed about 3 tons. was powered by a 30 horsepower engine and had a top speed of 28 mph (45 km/h). It had self-sealing tyres to minimise damage from shrapnel and bullets and carried steel channels which could be laid across trenches. Two prototypes were built and one tested by the Ministry of War in February 1906 gave a good performance, although fumes from the gun made conditions inside very uncomfortable. The test car was then sent to French Morocco and the other was sold to the Russian government, which ordered a further ten, slightly improved vehicles. In 1909 Hotchkiss produced four armoured cars for the Turkish Army. These resembled the original CGV of 1902 but were based on more advanced touring cars...

Thanks for the laugh. I've seen that photo dozens of times before, but never with such a great caption. :D

The "Pregnant Buick" drew a lot of scorn in its day, but the design has aged well. Harley Earl's second project after the 1927 LaSalle, it was supposed to be a celebration of Buick's 25th anniversary, but some accounts have it as nearly having sunk the nameplate.

Earl maintained that the beltline bulge looked better in his designs, but that the engineers changed things around for ease of production and to use existing components.

GM got over it, I guess, since Earl was their chief stylist for the next 30 years or so.

Looks as though dad is sitting for a pose with the young'ns & the family car, while mom snaps the pic. What's that, a REO? Jordan, maybe?
