SWI66, I've seen stills from a lot of early movies but never knew the names of the films. If you have the time could you list some of the early ones, Pre 1940?

SWI: 37Kid has a point there. I remember that there's a HAMB thread, mainly on '50s and '60s hotrod/fast-car movies. BUT, I don't recall ANYthing on pre-WWII movies wherein a car or cars played much of a role -- though they certainly did. People adored cars then, and so they showed up a LOT in the movies. Some sort of list would be a big asset, I would think. Thanks, guys!

This a great pic of the Babe! I recall that he had a Packard he'd go cat around in after sunset. Is this it? I can't tell from the close-up.

Jimi, I don't recall seeing any other photos of him in this or any other car from that era, but might have to start scrounging. From the limited view here, this does look to be a Packard 3rd series twin six - the steering wheel is the giveaway.

Right on, Twin6! '21 Packard, and Babe, as usual, entertaining youn'uns!

Anybody know what the covered-up the car below is, or its year?

One fun aspect to threads like this, is that the discussion can follow a particular direction for a while, until enthusiasm wanes or we all run out of photos or something else comes along! I never thought I'd be scrounging for Babe Ruth pix, but after Jimi's curiosity about the custom Packard, a little digging turned up these. On the left, Babe in Dexter Park, Brooklyn. On the right, he's en route to Comiskey Park. Again, Packards. I'm still looking for another (better) photo of the Packard custom runabout I first posted, which I have been assured is "out there" -- maybe a Fleetwood.

There are many, off the top of my head, there's "Burn em up Barnes"

Race-car driver "Burn-'em-Up" Barnes, adopts Bobbie Riley, the kid brother of his buddy George Riley, who was killed in a race. Barnes enters into a partnership in a bus transportation business with Marjorie Temple, whose life he saved in a battle with some gangsters. John Drummond, a scheming promoter, knows that land Marjorie has inherited lies atop valuable oil deposits and tries every method to wreck her business and force her to sell the land at a low price. Barnes takes desperate chances to raise money and keep Marjorie from losing her property in spite of the attempts made on his life. This, like most of the Mascot serials, is very visually interesting because of the many outdoor scenes that depict the L.A. area of the time. This was what they call a "serial", short episodes used before the feature film. Kind of like a tv episode, before tv.
A Truck Driving Movie "They Drive by Night"
Two brothers struggle as wildcat truck drivers; one comes to harm, the other is accused of his friend's murder. A remote garage door opener plays a part in this movie, lots of great cars, and vintage trucks. Humphry Bogart, actually 1940.

The following as well as Blond Comet(1941) and the Burn em Up Barnes serial, are bundled with other films in a 20 movie pack called "Burnt Rubber" and available on Amazon.
    Ten Laps to Go(1936)
    High Gear (1933)
    Danger on Wheels(1940)
    Born to be Wild(1938)

Other movies in the compilation include the original Fast and the Furious (1954)

And don't forget, films with Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Keystone Cops and more featuring a lot of old cars doing funny things.

I'll have to check my archives for even more. This is just what comes to mind.
There are plenty of "other" films in the 50's that are off the wall too.

Thanks, '37Kid! The grille was so covered up with guys & dead animals that I though it was a '34. So thanks for clearing it up!

Here's a personal favorite comedy classic, from 1929. Hal Roach's "The Perfect Day" with Laurel & Hardy and "Uncle" Edgar Kennedy. In the early soundie, the extended family is supposedly going to take advantage of PERFECT Sunday weather to go for a picnic in the country. The car, however, NEVER gets going, the neighbors' "helpful" input is tediously tortuous to Stan & Ollie as they wrestle with one mechanical problem then another, and the laughs never stop! I think the cast and CAR here should have gotten an Academy Award!

And for the fun of it, family men Stan & Ollie in street clothes,
in Hal Roach's sound truck, chatting with "The Little Rascals." What a cool pic.

More vehicles inside trees - a White and a Pierce at Wawona, the giant sequoia at Yellowstone. I guess in the first part of the 20th century, as the motor vehicle became more popular and tourism began, this sort of pose must have been quite exciting and eventually it became a common event.

Second car = midwest substitute for water skiing? Either way, you end up soaked and aching. That had to be hard work.

Before bumper stickers and window decals, there were pennants.

One of the aqueduct workers in California decided to use a section for his own garage. I believe it is about a 1908 Royal Tourist.

This photo was taken in Bonne Terre, Missouri, might possibly be the local garage. The kid has a pipe wrench in his hands for all the precise and delicate work the shop did.

Okay, okay! I wasn't REALLY gonna keep you in the dark! Taken August 2, 1926. this is "Miss Marjorie Joesting." Marjorie was both Miss Washington, D.C., and a Miss America runner-up at Atlantic City in 1926. National Photo Company Collection glass negative. I think this company's main business was photography of myriad subjects for possible use in the newspapers, the primary source of news visuals in those days. It comes to us today on this chat board THANKS to Shorpy, a company which maintains a huge archive of old-time photos for stock use. I think they can also make you a suitable-for framing print of most of their stock shots.

I think what is so engaging here -- even quaintly innocent -- is that this was a time when beauty didn't require all sorts of artificial enhancements and thousands of dollars' worth of photo equipment.

T6.....Ithe other day I mentioned to you that the make of the car in the photo looked familiar......well I found out what it is, an Acme. The second photo show an NY to Seattle racer for comparison. They also raced in the Vanderbilt.

The Acme was a model of chain-driven touring car made by the Reber Manufacturing Co in Reading, Pennsylvania, from 1903 to 1911.
The company was founded in 1892 by James C. Reber to make bicycles. The Acme was preceded by the Reber, which was manufactured in 1902–03 and was powered by a vertical-twin engine. The first Acmes also had twin-cylinder engines but were soon followed by four-cylinder models and in 1909 by a six-cylinder. The 1909 9653 cc Vanderbilt Six featured overdrive fourth gear.

The company went into receivership in 1906, and its last cars were made in 1911. The factory was sold to SGV (Herbert M.Sternbergh, Robert E.Graham, and Fred Van Tine), which continued making some of the range until 1915.[citation needed] Then the line was sold to Phianna, which moved production to Newark, New Jersey.
