Jeez, what a day! Chicago and Missouri. "Had to do" things were worlds largest ketchup bottle and birthplace of the corn dog, but since we ran into Lincolns birthplace we figured we had to go to his tomb(we keep running into the guy everywhere), but the tomb, cemetery and town were damn beautiful. So much fun shit crammed into one day, and covered some good ground too. Car is doing so good, just damn fun. Bringing back more memories of our 66 trip in 2009. We went to many of the places you have done. Ted Drewes is a must do on 66. If you are still travelling and looking for an overnight stay at the Wagon Wheel Motel and have dinner at the Kansas BBQ next door. The motel is now fully renovated(not like when we stayed there, another story).

  5. I agree with all of MMM1693's places to visit and, although it appears you may be beyond TN by now, I'd include stops in Memphis at the Rendezvous (52 S. 2nd St.) for good Memphis style eats and night life, as well as Corky's (5259 Poplar Ave.) for some good Memphis BBQ and ribs. A stop at Graceland wud be in order to complete the trio of recording studio visits. Elvis had a recording studio at Graceland and there were jam sessions nightly during his time living there. You also might want to stop at SnS Hot Rods in Amarillo (6811 Mack Rd.) for a look see. They built the black, '57 Chrysler Saratoga that is a finalist for Goodguys' Custom Rod of the Year. I don't know what other projects they may have going.

I'm enjoying your reporting and pix from your trip. I'm living vicariously through you on this trip as it has been over 50 years since I first drove from Washington, DC to San Francisco in my Corvette on my way overseas. I definitely want to do a more leisurely trip across the country in my coupe seeing the sights along the way just as you have done. You certainly have a great wife to suggest your trip to Detroit be done in the hot rod. Does she have a sister?;):D Have a safe, uneventful, and enjoyable trip back to Phoenix!

Not too many pics today, pushed it pretty hard yesterday and been tired all day, woman too. But we did push through Oklahoma, covering the roads and attractions we missed because of rain on the way to Detroit. The big goofy blue whale was the main thing we had to get to, lots of uneventful 66 windy roads, lots of neat 66 windy roads, and, the largest totem pole park thingy. Kinda wimped out about 5:30 today, and gonna push hard next 2 days through Texas and Az to hopefully be home friday(ya right!). Thanks for all of your kind words, more tomorrow! 13th and 14th days. Really pushed it on thurs and got into New Mexico, not much stopping but still had a blast, except for, fucking Amarillo and all around it. Crazy windy, and for this car, that's the worst. It's tall and light and just like a big box going down the highway getting blown around. There is nothing like serious cross winds while your passing a diesel. White knuckle ride. Over and over and over. Like your fighting a cross wind while doing 80 then it suddenly stops. I guess that's a super small taste of how you crash at Bonneville. I'll stop crying. Once we got into NM the roads smoothed out and so did the wind, and it was smooth sailing. I stopped for gas and as I pulled out I saw some old junk, and saw a lil' museum sign, pulled in, and saw some T's, then more, then some A's, then some more.......... I'm figuring everyone knows about this Lewis guy and his stuff, but it was fun to look and I thought the old guy was great. We bullshitted forever and I looked in every nook and cranny of the place. At one point I saw 2 very large crates, among a ton of old Ford stuff, that I'm pretty sure we're filled with 33-34 grilles. There were plenty of T and A bodies that were definitely usable. Not selling anything, period. It was still fun. We camped that night, woke early and pushed for Phx through Holbrook, our last 66 stop cuz I've seen the rest a bunch of times, and headed home through Payson and Az's beautiful forest. It was a trip to see after going through 13 other states, its really beautiful, I really love this place, but there is so much out there, and I've been very lucky to explore a small but awesome fraction of it for the past 14 days, especially in my old Ford. Thanks for following along, I haven't put a ton of time into composing this, just documenting by the seat of my pants and as quick as I can cuz I'm not to fond of all this thumb typing! Cheers!

P.S.- I'd like to say thanks to my friends the Haifley Bros, who are always down to lend a helping hand, and on here, Matt, Landseaandair, for dialing in my motor when I put this car together, and then once again when it had some problems. He put the time in to help out and I couldn't appreciate it more. Thanks, Matt! Wouldn't have made this trip without the help of good friends!

We took a photo from that same spot about 3 years ago and then stopped at the little gift shop on the other side. Not the fancy one but the little one down below.

  17. Looks like an epic trip! Just curious, what kind of speeds were you usually pulling each day? How'd it do on fuel mileage? Are you still running the stock cowl tank? I'm sure this isn't a trip you'll forget anytime soon.

I wasn't in a hurry, and depending on wind conditions, we were doing the speed limit mostly, 65-75. Still have the cowl tank so there was a lot of stops and a 5 gallon can in the trunk, but only used it twice. I don't wanna know the gas mileage, not good at all. It's got a 2bbl and the hills seem to eat up the gas. Next trip I think I'll put a 4bbl on it
