Projects picked up a Stutz (actually a pair)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by LowKat, Oct 28, 2010.

  1. Got a call asking if I wanted a pair of 1930's Stutz's....

I say HELL YEA and don't even know what they are for sure. He tells me the garage roof is resting on them and will collapse when they're pulled out. Pulled 'em out and it did cave in.

These were right in the middle of town, I've driven past them thousands of times. The garage was covered with Blackberries but had no door and if you looked hard enough, they could both be seen from the street all these years. Last licensed in 1972 and parked in the same place since.

One of them is very complete although the roof has caved in due to the rotten wooden bows. I have all the rear sheet metal that is missing in the photos. The 2nd one is missing the drivetrain and very rusty. The nose is however pretty good and could be used for a build.

From what I can tell they are 1936 or 1937. Made by Stutz and called a Pak-age-car. It's driven while standing up. Has a very small 4 cylinder flathead engine mounted in the rear along with the rear facing radiator. Couple other interesting features are the Corvette style independent rear suspension and the front has a pair of transverse mounted springs with upper A-arms for independent front suspension.

They were manufactured by Stutz from 1935? to 1937 then the operation was taken over by Diamond T and they were made through the 1940's. From what I've read there was about 300-350 of the Stutz's built with less than 10 still known to exist.

Not sure what I'm doing with them yet, I already have a couple projects ahead of these and don't know if I want to tackle a MAJOR project like this.

Anybody have an idea of value?

    Here's the complete one.

With less than ten in existance, you know what you're going to do. You're in the box seat holding all the right cards...

I dont know about ugly. I think the second one would make a wicked hot rod, and the top one should be restored to stock.

    Very interesting cars.

  22. I thought that milk truck looked familiar. Shot these at a truck show in Auburn, Indiana in 2005. This one is a Diamond T. Never knew that Stutz was involved in building this kind of stuff. :D

  23. To me doesn't look like much a person can do but restore. To restore corectly would be a fortune, and to not spend a fortune why even do it. Get word out to Jay Leno and see if he wouldn't bite. Remember he's the self proclaimed President of the more money than brains club. If they really are that rare, they deserve to be done up right.

These are news to me - and it's good news! Love 'em! Lessee... slammed over a tube chassis with a twin turboed flatty/6-speed combo. Would make an appropriate tow truck for my Morris... Maybe you could sell one for enough $ to finance building the other...

  26. It has a small seat like a bicycle seat. It's on a pole like a long bicycle seat post. Also has a curved steel strap attached at the base of the seat which fits into a slot at the base of the vertical dashboard. The seat has a very small backrest like a cheap office chair. The whole business kinda flops around but supports you standing up.

(I'll take some photos) I only got to work on it for an hour today and that time was spent just digging out all the compost that's on top of the collapsed roof panel.

It looks to me like the throttle is on the gear shift lever and controlled with one finger. It has two levers on the shift lever. I haven't seen any signs of a gas pedal.

The other truck has something that looks similar to a horn ring but it's below the steering wheel. The 'ring' can turn with the steering wheel. Maybe that's the throttle? I forgot to see if it had a gas pedal or not. It has no extra levers on the gearshift lever.

I think you're right about the wheels, they are 15". They have clips for a dog dish hupcap but the clips are at the outside of the wheel center. The caps would be larger than a baby moon style. It has two Buick wheelcovers on it that look like mid 1950's.

When I heard Stutz, I was thinking the same thing but within a few seconds was told they were "some kind of a van".

I've done a little more research and found out Auburn had the Pak-Age-Car between Stutz and Diamond-T but don't know if any vehicles were produced by them.

You are correct. For right now, I'm going to just clean it up, get the roof propped back up and see what more I can find out about it.

You're probably right but I'd love to restore it. I don't really have the funds to "do it right" though.

    Good ideas!

  29. I would think these two will find their way to a transport museum somewhere in the U.S.A. Very interesting .
