Got this for $100 today. Guy bought it from an online auction and had not removed it. Had to be gone by 5:00 pm today. I’m still not sure why I got it? Anyhow, I assume this might be the VIN? It was on the driver side dash. What do I have? Looks like some numbers might be illegible? Thanks! Doug
Looking at the tiny pictures, the exterior door handle suggests’47-‘48 Ford. The dash, looking through the window does not look like a’46-‘48 ford dash. I cannot really see it though. I would make a wild ass guess and say the number on the dash goes with the dash from another car as ‘46-‘48 Fords did not have numbers like that on the dash or anywhere else besides the frame. The vin number on your car should be on the driver’s side frame rail top near the steering box. It will have a star stamped at the front and rear of the number.
I don’t know that the number on the frame really tells you much though. It’s a 47-8 either way. Not a lot left for me to really pin it down further and yeah not a ford dash that I’m Familiar with
The bodies were pretty much the same from '42 - '48. Same tail light openings and use the same lights for those years, too. The dash is not correct for that body. The VIN does not go with that car. Even if it were a state issued new VIN, it should be stamped or tagged on the A pillar or the firewall and stamped on the frame. Clean and look closely where the left frame rial attaches to the front cross member. Thats where the original VIN was stamped. Often illegible, though. It could maybe be a Mercury body, too. (?)
That tag has nothing to do with vehicle serial number either. As others said, the serial number was originally on the frame near the steering box, and on the engine bellhousing. It was not on any body tags.
