I am going to run a 46 ford pickup center section (open drive line) with 36 axle housings and the pickup hydraulic brakes. I have looked at ford parts drawings and know the 3rd member bearings are different on the 36, will the cups fit from the 37 up. And also does anyone have the Timken # for the bearings and races (pinion and 3rd member). We have access to bearings through our business and a lot of old bearings on the shelf I would like to use up. Thanks D1
I'm in the process of rebuilding a couple of these right now, so I can check when I get home tonight.
Check this dimension. Before dis***embing the Pickup ring gear carrier take a caliper and measure the distance from the inner rear edge of the carrier taper bearing to the opposite side carrier bearing. Now do the same with the 36 ring gear carrier bearing unit. This dimension should be the same and only require you to swap the taper carrier bearings..... remove the wider 46 bearing and reinstall the thinner 36 bearing. It is still important to determine the ring gear bearing crush so you should follow the procedure of rebuilding and setting the crush and back lash as outlined in Ford service bulletins or Motors manual instructions. Also remember that the axle lengths are different and you must run the 36 axles in the 36 tubes and this requires the use of the 36 spider gears to be swaped in also.
Thanks guys I have not tore them apart yet trying to finish my frame but thought I would get my ducks rowed up to shorten my rebuild time. Will look for the PN later I think I can lessen the cost of a bearing set. We'll see and if I can if anyone needs a set maybe I can help. Thanks D1
'37 - '48 Ford pinion bearing cup (double race) is Ford part number 48-4616, Timken part number 27820D. '37 - '48 Ford pinion bearings are Ford part number 46-4821B, Timken part number 27880. If you have a source that sells these at a discount, please let me know. I used to be able to get these for a lot less than what the early Ford parts places sell them for, but all of the bearing distributors in my area have closed up shop.
How do I tell one Banjo rear from another? I found one yesterday. It has mechanical brakes and a turque tube.
The easiest way is by the spring hangers. But if it has mechanical brakes, it's '36 or earlier. The later ones all have hydraulic brakes. The '35 - '36 rears have mounting points on the axle tubes for the radius rods, and the radius rods have the rear spring hangers built into them. On the later banjos, the radius rods mount between the axle tubes and brake backing plates, and the spring hangers are part of the axle tube.
I checked my source the 27820d i can get for 15.25 the 27880 is 31.85 my source seems to be high on the bearings but the race is price is good. Did anyone have the PN's for the 3rd member. Thanks D1
