I'm going to look at this 1949 Chrysler on Saturday .The guy says "
flat head 6 all there pickled motor rebuilt by genes 13 years ago" Any one ever deal with a Pickled motor? I'm thinking about trading my OT
    71 Torino for it

In the boat workd, it means a motor that sunk and was revived. Hope its not the same.

Either filled with oil in the cylinders, or a motor that was revved up, and stalled out by pouring oil down the carb to prevent rust.

Does it smell like vinegar? Just kidding. Pickling an engine means different things to different people. It generally refers to some method of lubricating the entire engine (including the combustion chambers) prior to storage.

Anytime you cant start a motor, consider the value that it needs a complete rebuild, and consider yourself lucky if it doesnt. Keep the torino, imo.

Your Torino must be pretty rough.

That's what I think he meant ..The Old guy he got it from did this "pickled" before he parked ..I just wasn't sure if it was a big deal to undo.Said motor was rebuilt 13 years ago .Maybe he has proof of this and how long its been sitting I'm not sure .I called him on my lunch from work today.

Lol no .Its a four door ,Daily driver I'm just not really that into it.

  19. To unpickle, you just remove the plugs and crank. Gets a little messy though.

check the dipstick, too, in case he loaded up the crankcase, you'll have to drain it off then.

My dad got a car once that some old timer "pickled" What was done was the entire engine was filled with oil! He filled the crank case up until no more oil could get poured down the fill pipe then poured oil down the carb until the entire top end was full! must have been 20 gallons of oil in it.that was back in the early 60s the car was from the late 30s (home made truck) the old man told a lot of people the car ran excellent but everyone figured it for junk because it wouldn't turn over. My dad knew the old guy and said he knew his stuff back when my dad was a youngster so he paid the old guy 35$ for it and just like the old dude said after cleaning everything out the car ran great !But what a mess cleaning out oll that old drain oil!!

in aircraft terms: a pickled engine is one where all the internals are coated in preservative to prevent corrosion when shipping...kinda like cosmoline on guns

i imagine that the cylinders and block are probably full to the brim with oil.

We pickled car engines by drowning them out with chain saw bar oil or drain oil. Run at a fast idle, then slowly pour it down the carb till it choked off. BUT keep the torino.

    Deuces

Means he poured a good bottle of Scotch down the carb...

  29. This is just me, but I would probably remove the pan and let it drain for a day or two, visibly check how clean the crank area is and if clean, new filter and cheap oil........run for a short time..(coupla minutes).....then drain and inspect oil. If the oil looks relatively clean .....new filter, new oil, good to go, or...repeat step one if you are not sure.
Don't forget to remove plugs and turn it over to empty cylinders....messy...mmmmmm. :D
