I never saw it at the Stafford swap, I must have missed that year. Anyways, your color of brown matches what another local guy said, when we last saw it at the rod swap on Rt 5 in S.Windsor, at a car auctions big parking lot. That swap I think was part of Juliano's club he was in. Had to be mid to later 70s? I just can't recall years anymore, but that swap was not there for too many years. I didn't think it had a motor either, but the other guy thought there was a sbc mock up block in there? As I recall, the seller was from Coventry Ct. Boy that car went to shit in just a few short years, from when I last saw it on the road in Tolland & Rockville Ct, about maybe 70 or 71, it was still Nailhead, still blue. It was for sale at 3500 in that blue/nailhead version when I saw it 70/71? I think a Pratt worker? bought it when it was all messed up/apart/brown, but retired later, and hauled it to a residential garage/home in Fla, and was still there for 20 years, then his CTfriend lost track of the guy and car.
Here is the photographer's studio. Most likely he will remember, Looks like a museum background to me. http://www.redbubble.com/people/barkeypf/portfolio
F&J, will try to post the shot I have in the AM, if I remember right, there was an asking price of $1200 at Stafford...guessing it was very early eighties?
Not sure what ever happened to Sampson's sedan delivery. Bobby Rotondo recently sold Kelsey's flamed 34 Coupe (now black with red int) Joe Orlando's widow still owns the red sedan delivery and has had it out recently John Lyon's 33 5W went somewhere down the Cape and disappeared in the early 80's Tim Carroll's car is still owned by his son and is pretty much unchanged No idea what became of Mike Budrow's channeled 34. Pic was taken in 1959-60 Most likely went to the crusher I'm sure you'll recognize the 32 3W in this pic.
Rick, I'bet it was taken on the Saratoga Springs, NY museum show over a year ago. All the rods were there. Tommy's incl.
Baron, I worked very old channeled ,about 7 inch 5/window about ten years ago that looks a lot like Mike Budrows coupe ..It was bought from Ray Williams in R.I. and I was told it can from the Cape ...Had a original dropped 40 axle, early rear ,and 39 box.. X member really cut up, i still have the leftover pieces..Top was filled with flat sheetmetal..Also rear wheels were buick hoops turned around with part of centers buick centers, still in tack, and ford centers welded on...
Cool pic Baron, the 3 window looks strangely familiar ??? How bout those Camaro rally wheels, red insert and no hood ??? I wonder if Christy still owns it at this point ??
anybody recognize this 34 chassis? set up for y block. olds rear, home made reversed wheels, recapped slicks.
That is not a Buick rear. It is a 49/50 Olds with matching Olds trailing arms. Actually, it can be earlier, as Olds used the coil & trailing arm setup from 1940 through 1950...and perhaps on the cheapest series in 51, but i'd have to look it up. The first V8 was 49 so I would assume they used a V8 rear...maybe I just picked up an old late 50s Boston area build with that rear, but on coils. Mine also has a spring-ahead, which is one reason I wanted the car
Hi Jack. Be nice to know the car survived. Hope all is well with you. Christy did still own it. One of the first outings he took the car too. Not like him to take an un-finished car out.
Thanks for the pic of the Ice Box. I was lucky enough to see it being driven in it's final days in blue. It was coming over the small crest of a hill, and a wide turn, so I got a good long look. Geez, it looked so hard core, real low, and the chop even sort of looked more intense in the darker color with the chromed W/S frame.
The Ice Box was a 33-34. I dont know of any pics showing it in a more 'modern' state or such. The details always get sketchy after "It went down to Florida...." There were rumors that the car had come back north to CT and was in a garage/barn etc... but nothing substantiated. Last reliable info was that the car is still in FLA. Maybe sans the grille/shell and engine. Have been trying to get better info about it for nearly 20yrs with out much progress. My guess is that it is sitting in a garage just collecting dust and storing memories.
The info I heard, came from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft workers. Some older guy there, knew the guy who retired to Fla with the car. I am not sure if the Fla guy worked at Pratt or not. when the car was for sale at the swapmeet in Soth Windsor, CT, supposedly the seller had a magazine showing the car, and maybe some other printed history. I am sure those would have went to the buyer, but if he passed away much later, and if the stuff was stored in his house, maybe they got seperated from the car....then a new owner would never be able to know what the remains used to be?
Yeah, I have heard a similar story. But when was the last swap meet in South Windsor/Windsor area? Has to be about 30yrs now that I can remember. Was at the Southern Auto Auction site on RT 5. So, again no real solid info. Plenty of guys from Pratt were into hot rods/street rods and would have known the car and likely some would have known the owner. But trying to get real info is not so easy on this car.
Ask your father if he knows who bought the old purple 33/34 full fender 5w that Russ Gottier sold 2 weeks before he passed away. Russ had the coupe at the Stafford Auto Salvage yard that he owned. The guy who bought it from Russ (5 yrs ago?), was about your fathers age and was a lifer at Pratt E/H plant and was still there as of 1-1/2 years ago, and was never going to retire. That guy had the coupe restored to a street rod and I think it's red. He is from Stafford, near "Sun Valley" I think. He knew all the old rods from Stafford/Ellington and remembered the purple car, and that's why he hounded Russ for it. He might know the name of the Fla guy? The only other guy i can think of is a guy i am doing work for on a coupe, and he was at pratt about that time. I will ask him. He had a 32 channeled 5w then and was putting in a hopped 303 he got from another Pratt guy in the early 70s..so maybe he knows the Fla story. Longshot though.
Met with Curtis Hardy yesterday and got a whole bunch of images from the mid 50s to the early 60s of what was happening in the Tappets hot rod club in Manchester NH along with many images of his Best in Show (note plaque attached to photo) 1961 Hartford Autorama 1929 Ford roadster. here is a link to the Tappets thread http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=831132
