+pics(I cant belive im actually contemplating this) So i go to the paint jobber ...

  1. ..with my spray outs of colors I'm looking for. I've been experimenting with some custom colors for a while now. After almost a year of trying to pick a color, I've finally found one that I can't quit looking at! Absolutely love it. Lots of experiments, time and pints of paint to get there.

I went to the big one in town where they have everything. Where the big custom paint guys go. ;)

I Tryed this vvvv same thing at the local little guy first and was unhappy with the results.

Anyway The guy goes nuts over my samples. He loves them and wants to know what I did and how I did it. Takes them out side in the sun and keeps flopping and flipping them. I had 3 - a metallic red that really really pops, a metallic blue that's equally awesome, and my finished one that flopps from the DEEPEST pure black ( think centari Pitch black) to Candy apple red . Man its awesome I tell you. I've knick named it "Poison Apple" & it looks so good I want to lick it.

I tell him I need the red & blue in a base coat. I had one sample of each cleared and one not- in each of them. He's scratching his head and asked "how did you get what you have now? " He goes on and on about the flakes pearls, heavy metallic and of course the red candy and blue candy. " Do you remember what you put in there ?"

I say sure, but there's no candy on the red or blue, its straight clear" . He says" I cant believe that not candy, really ?" I say " nope its this ( pull out the red rattle can ) and this ( pull out the other blue rattle can) but the black is candy. Black candy over this rattle can red." I tell him I need the red to build the flop off of. "Mix me up some red to match the rattle can"

He starts looking and matching and and talking and an hour later says its going to be nearly impossible to match that red. " might come close but you'll be at 200.00 a pint range.

I think oh **** ME RUNNING ! Nothing else has worked like that with the black candy. Nothing . I finally find what I want and can't have it. 1600.00 a gallon for base coat, & 200 just to try it for a spray out???

So here's where I scarred myself for thinking such a thing.

24 cans of the red would be 288.00 for 2 gallons RTS. Not bad for something they can't duplicate at 1600.00 a gallon. I would need to get the paint out of the rattle cans so I could spray it thru my gun.

Its duplicolor metal specks retro red and rustoleum metallic blue.

Hell, call Dupicolor and offer to sell them your new conglomeration...tell them you know how to mix it and if they'll mix it for you you'll tell them your secret...

  4. Well I haven't "Begged" them , but I did ask and that wasn't an option for them.
They are local and I believe a visit is in order. I'll bring the samples and the proper begging attire. I'm certainly not above it

You could conceivably decant 24 spray cans (your finger is going to hurt:p) But I bet it will end up being a LOT less than 2 gallons once the propellant flashes off.

How to pick a color... put all the paint chips on the wall. Close your eyes and throw a dart. (and if the dart hits your wife, she gets to choose the color) :)

Hahaha, I thought I was the only mad scientist around. I've been doing lots of tests with various alkyd (Rustoleum, Valspar, Krylon) in hopes of duplicating old style enamel paint. The results have been much better than expected.

you need to go to another paint shop. there's a million variants of red out there surely one's close to what your looking for--you need someone who's experienced and willing to custom mix it for you straight from tints. I gota guy I'd use here, but here's a LONG way from there.

as an aside, red's getting spendy. last time I bought a pint I about fell over at the price--not quite than bad, but WAY more than I expected. I also priced a late model toyota color I was considering for the avatar and the paint alone was nearly a grant for the gallon and that was with my discount! needless to say it may stay hot rod black

agreed on all the time you spent sanding. Don't stop now and with spray bombs. It will be worth it in the end. As far as your paint shop befriend someone there and see if it allows you to get a behind the scenes approach for the color you want.

Paint is not getting any cheaper that it for sure.

what painkiller said. We use to have a Matrix jobber here and they had the same setup, chips arranged by color family instead of car manufacture. Made matching a sample soooo much easier.
$200 a pint is crazy, I remember paying $14 for a gallon of red Centari to paint the first car I ever painted, of course that was 1973. I miss those days.

  12. I'm trying my hardest not to brother. I wouldn't spray it out of the cans , doesn't that legitimize things any ?
Like I said in the ***le - I can't believe I'm actually contemplating this
So I turn to my hamb brothers for some input

The guy has mixed more paint, with more different paint systems than I can count.
Custom one off colors, matches, factory stuff. He's never seen a red pop like that and its a f---ing rattle can. HOK, vibrance and a few others didn't come close.

I really don't want to go with a Tri coat , just to bury it under several coats of black candy, But they don't do what I want or need to any way.

Some mad man figured it out for the rattle can, there's got to be another who can do it in BC/cc or SS.

  13. Yea, youre right - maybe I should get 48 cans :)

I go to my local paint store and make colors all the time. I just wave and go mix my own paints. Including matching a 56 porsche blue. (its a very strange color and you cant get the right mix code unless you can talk fluent german)

I say... STAY AWAY FrOM RATTLE CANS

Check out Auto-Air/Wicked water borne paints, they are easy to use, damn near drinkable and cheap enough to experiment with.
They are marketed to the airbrush guys but can and have been used for overall paint jobs.

I have never painted a whole car with them, but have painted several motorcycles with Auto-Air.

    My bike: http://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=648
    http://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=648&pictureid=7998

This paint is southern poly 6620 black epoxy, about 2oz of Auto-Air transparent magenta ($7 for a 4oz bottle), and cleared with Southern Poly universal clear. The paint is about three years old in the linked pics and has never been wet sanded or buffed, rarely washed, and sees about 500mi a week in the summer....its held up well for a paint job that cost less than dinner for a small family. It looks black in low light and real dark burgundy in bright light.
I painted my wife's bike with the same products (diff color)at the same time and it has held up well even after being dropped/laid down a couple of times.

This stuff is easy to work with and all of the colors and effects can be mixed and or used together.

I got the Auto-Air from my PPG jobber, but TPC Global carries it, Hobby Lobby even carries some of the colors.

The TPC site has pdf files of the color charts, and spraying instructions.

Summit Racing carries the color as well.

some transparent black toner in inter coat clear...tint to color desired. not too difficult ,especially if you have a paint supplier that's not afraid to play around with some material;)

  20. Make your move wisely!

    Remember all that block sanding!

If you want to get the paint out of spray bombs put them in the freezer overnight then open with a can opener. BE CAREFUL you might get a *psssht* at first but most of the pressure will be gone.

    Later.....

Put cans in freezer upside down overnight , hold upside down and push to release pressure, then open with can opener.

They have other colors too .

  23. The black toner isn't the problem ,
Its the base that's the problem getting a match .
They will play somewhat, but they are afraid that I won't like it.

that is a good idea, you will not need a whole gallon.

Way back in the 60s there was a guy in the magazine that used something like 1000 bottles of nail polish to get what he wanted. So maybe it isn't to crazy.[ But I wouldn't] Jack

don't ask Dupli-color to mix it for you...ask them to out those two colors in paint cans, quart or gallon, instead of rattle cans. Then mix it yourself.

cant you do a spray out with just the color you want instead of putting the candy on top. Then take that to the paint store and see if they can make that color. They should be able to take a profit ,picture, of it that will tells them the mix ratio. I would think you could get really close anyways for alot less than 200 a pint. Or if you know someone at a local bodyshop maybe they can mix you something up.
