    Hello,

When we had our 58 Chevy Impala with the red interior, it went through plenty of changes. It was a fast car for being stock and that was the purpose for my brother. He wanted a car that could keep up or surpass his friend’s Oldsmobile powered 34 5 window coupe. He would not admit it and they never raced, but the times we put on the 58 Impala were equal to the 34 coupe. Still good friends to this day.

We knew of the cost of getting chromed reversed wheels and settled for several cans of different spray paint. As much as we liked Moon Discs, when we tried putting up a friend’s set to look at them on the black Impala, it just did not look good on the big sedan. So, it remained paint versions until we were able to secure a set of Buick Skylark wire rims years later.

We knew the best look may have been American Racing Equipment 5 Spoke Mags for the Impala, but they were very costly for teenagers at the time of introduction.

So, we moved along from the last phase after the Buick Skylark Wire Wheel incident to say goodbye.

Many years later in the late 60s-early 70s, our conversation turned to getting some wheels for our new El Camino. Instantly, chromed reversed wheels came to mind. Then, we saw a neighbor with some slotted steel wheels and small hubcaps. They were silver and looked like mag wheels.

The wheels came off of a Corvette and were 15 inch wheels. On the El Camino, they looked great after they came as a set of them with tires to match. The Corvette owner put American Racing 5 Spokes on his sporty car. So the cost was right for his pristine used set.

Now, this top 58 Impala photo has solved the mystery of what those slotted steel rims and hubcaps would have looked like on our 1958 black Impala… minus the white lettering on the tires, of course.
