Ya know, it's one thing to be well known and yet another to be friggin' famous when you live in Arkansas and a mural of the car shows up in a Pacoima Ca barrio sharing the spotlight with Richie Valens. Jeez Louise!!! 49890932108_c11ae54f82_c.jpg

  13. Haha! That's pretty dang cool right there. I'd love to know why the artist chose Lee's car out of all the others in the world he could have picked. Lee didn't know about the mural...he thought it was way cool!!

  21. Almost an AG Impala...

Being a Merc guy it's surprising that my fave AG car and character is the Impala and Toad. I always related to him as a dork myself and all of Pat Ganahl's early articles trying to persuade all us car guys to consider mild customs as a daily driver really spoke to me. Of course I have the chopped Merc, but the Chevy, my 64 Pontiac and obviously Lee's Impala are all mild customs....and all daily drivers (when they are running LOL) just as Pat begged us.

  24. Not trying to be negative, but.... There's certain colors that certain cars shouldn't be painted. Just saying.

My dad always had a thing for yellow cars. I can't tell you how many times I had to talk him out of painting a car yellow...

He did have a 64 El Camino that was a pale yellow that was gorgeous. Man I would love to track it down and buy it back

Not trying to hijack. I love 58 Chevys, lets see some more!

  26. I like yellow too, but that yellow is the wrong shade for that car. My Dad loved yellow too. He painted his 54 Chevy pickup a pale VW Bug yellow, and it really looked good.

    Hello,

Hopefully, we all know there was life before AG. It was there, but, one had to live there to see it all in its early action. So, for later on folks, their images of hot rodding started with views from the fictional information and one prolific writer’s way of seeing hot rods, plus, cruising in action. For a lot of teenagers back during the late 50s and early 60s, some of it was true. Snippets of society gathering in teenage hangouts.

But, as sad as it sounds, we were all in the minority. Out of 3000 students, perhaps 100, possible 200 were hot rod enjoying teenagers. The others, were teenagers, but had no idea about cars or building one. It was just plain, old daily transportation to and from school + jobs. A necessity, but not the end all to hot rod life or drag racing. If one does not include the 40-50 kids at Lion’s Dragstrip from our high school at various times, it would be a smaller group, still. Drag racing was not the topic of conversation and if it was brought up, weird stares would point directly at you, as if you were an intruder. Ha!

Worn Levis+ sandals vs. back of the pants buckle, dress pants for daily school and b/w “bucks” shoes.

Wait, we are talking about teenage hot rodding vs the other teenagers… So, if we classify or compare the normal beach loving teenagers, versus the so called “surfers,” it was perhaps 15 teens who surfed, including one girl. But, compared to hot rod kids, surfers were “way out there.”

Although the clothing of coastal lifestyle surfers played a big part of dressing up or as some call it, dressing down in the latest, hot Levis, t shirts and sandals. Even though some of the girls surfed, meeting their parents was a dress up day for us. Yikes…

So, there were White Impalas in existence as one is shown in 1958 model, heading into the Lion’s Dragstrip entrance driveway. There were none in competition in the big A/Stock class, so that lone white Impala was a spectator.

A bossy older brother commands that the younger kid, get out and take a movie of the entrance to Lion’s Dragstrip. He wanted to document “his” encounter with other racing impalas in the 1958 year. So, the 66 year old film rests in digital form for his sons to see how “ their Dad used his free time to enjoy life… besides school/work and surfing…”

    Note:

Our group of teenagers did have nice dress pants and attire for those date nights and family get togethers during the holidays. Nice dress pants attire sometimes consisted of clean Levis and desert boots. To go to the extremes, a striped dress shirt with button down collars. We were dressed up to the beyond the nines… toward the 10s, was more like it… YRMV
