X-8 Engine built by Henry Ford in 1925

This engine is do***ented as the final design of the experimental air-cooled prototype radial X-8 engine conceived by Henry Ford in 1918. He built the first X-8 in 1919 and built a special car, named the X-Car, to road test it in. After many design changes, he then built the second and final X-8 engine in 1925, which is the one pictured here. It was secretly tested in an Oldsmobile and driven around Detroit. This X-8 had the greatest appeal to Mr. Ford of both his air-cooled and water-cooled designs which he considered in the 1920s to replace the four cylinder engine in his popular Model T. After test driving this exact X-8 engine in an Oldsmobile for nearly a year, Henry Ford decided his engine needed more power and eventually developed the flathead V-8 design. The first flathead V-8 experimantal engine was built in 1927 and had 25 head studs. That one-off engine is also in a private collection owned by "Speedy" Bill Smith of Speedway Motors in Lincoln, Nebraska. Henry Ford finalized the flathead V-8 in 1931 with 21 head studs and went into production with it in 1932. The flathead V-8 was such a success it was used through 1953 in both Ford automobiles and trucks. It is still a great racing engine even today in 2009.

Even after "shelving" the X-8 in 1926, the X-8 project continued to remain a secret while Ford engineers worked on the flathead V-8 design. Several years later, possibly after the flathead V-8 became public, Mr. Ford placed this experimental X-8 engine on display in his museum in Dearborn where it was to remain forever to be shared with the public. However, this engine was apparently mi****aloged and many years later showed up in the museum inventory as a 1946 company project that was abandoned along the way. After Henry Ford's death on April 7, 1947, the significance of this piece of history was forgotten and during a redesign of the museum historical displays in the fifties or sixties the X-8 was removed from the museum and relegated to a spot on the concrete floor in the Sorghum Mill, an old building within Greenfield Village where several dozen old Ford prototype and experimental engines were stored. The result being it was a**** numerous engines designated for housecleaning and was put up for sale through an oversight at the 1982 Greenfield Village Dearborn Museum fundraiser auction

  6. It appears to be the top end of one of the aluminum experimental 302 "hemi" engines Chevy built for Smokey Yunick that someone has bolted onto a 69 DZ 302 iron block. Here is a pic of a complete aluminum Chevy smallblock hemi. The Can Am Chevy engines I'm familiar with were all aluminum big blocks similar to the ZL-1 engines used in a handful of 69 Camaros & 2 Vettes but were offered in different displacements. IIRC the biggest were 510 cubic inches. They were used in Chaparrals & McLarens a**** others.

  8. Here's a cool tidbit of useless information.. Here's a pic of 2 NOS 69 Corvette console trim plates. Notice the one on the right is for a 350 370 HO engine and it lists the horsepower, torque & compression ratio. All Corvette tags list that info except the ZL-1 tag shown on the left. All that info was kept a secret. Unfortunately there were only 2 of those cars ever built. Very cool pic HJmaniac. I had never seen a smallblock McLaren. I ***ume this is not a Can Am car ?

I found this old flathead on my fams property a few months back. Its an Overland, and I believe its between a 22-25?? There was also a cowl, rear end, and a ton of other misc parts for multiple 22-34 willys and ford cars. According to my dad, my great gramps bought all of them new. When he was done driving them he used their parts to build other things. This willys powered a saw mill that was still somewhat intact when i recovered these parts. To my amazment, the engine and rear end both spin with relatively little effort! They have been hiding in the woods for 70+ yrs!!! My plan is to build a rod using only what gramps has left behind. I know the engine wont have much power, but im going to stick with the 4 for sentimenal reasons. Im new to this old stuff so any info on where to get parts, info, etc for this engine would be much appreciated! Pic of engine is after I pulled the head off. Not a single bolt was stuck! And there was still an oily residue on cylinder walls!

Where did Henry's final X8 end up.That would be great to see.

  19. I believe it's at Greenfield Village, along with some other experimental engines of Henry's.

This is a Dearborn Marine Interceptor V8, which was based on the 312 CID Ford Y-block engine with a pair of Carter YH sidedrafts.

Here is the Chevy II 4 banger I had in my digger before the 283. It's an old USAC Midget engine.
