Those gears are junk. Those chunks are from stress cracks. Subsurface. The rear won’t last very long and will eat more bits off the gears and run them through your new bearings. Find another set of old gears. They are not uncommon. Should be able to find one, even in Alaska.
Back in the '50's and '60's there were hundreds of old Fords on the road with gears that looked like that.
Guess it all depends on your comfort level, definitely I would change the bearings but the ring and pinion are just fine for a vehicle that isn’t heavy or being raced. I guarantee bout half of you guys would shit your pants or puke a little your mouth if you saw what I run, trans and diff. The t85 makes some noise, it’s the best bits of 4 trannys and just plain worn out but I’ve put 25000 miles on it, much the same for the 9 “ diff made up from 3. Myself I value being able to keep most of my money in my pocket, I’ve no interest in trying to impress the fuckwits at the local parking lot showin shit, been there done that. With the seemly total lack of quality parts these days I’ll just keep cobbling old shit together and drive it!
Bearings not look very bad. I didnt see any rost. Old oil which is less or more look like rost. Need to see bearing races. Race shows if there is wear surface. If use old bearings, not use so much preload. With new, can have little more preload. After small drive should be OK. You feel preload (diff bearings) when put together. pinion must turn easily (when old bearings used) aso I would wash all first. Pinion bearings are most important check and maybe change (double tappered roller bearing front side of pinion + rear suport cylinderical roller bearing),.... but all need to wash first. First right preload with gaskets and after that You more gaskets from side to another to get right backlash. Im not sure which is right one. Racing rearaxles I use 15/100mm - 17/100mm. Old ford rear axles approx 0,2mm (20/100mm). Maybe its OK. Its ok when it feels good.
Motive is the gear sets you were asking about. Made in Italy ,yes.I have seen some more pitted than yours that guys use without a problem. Motive gear sets are mainly sold thru vendors. V8 Ford sales sells the pinion bearings and double cone. They say Timken but could be off shore made. What is your current gear set ratio? 9-34,9-37 ? Where are you in Europe? I am in France and maybe can help.Click on my user ID ,send me a PM and we can talk if you want. Here https://www.ebay.com/itm/264396144904
My gear ratio is 9:34 well i would like new gears or used but better conditions than those pictured abowe. Wondering if i could buy those gears directly from manufacturer.
I've had a couple rear ends I blew the spider and axle gears in. After replacing the gears, they kept right on keeping on, just fine....with dinged up ring and pinion.
Funny I was thinking of sawdust while drinking a pinch of Baileys Irish Creme. I would think early Ford ring and pinions are lapped, and matched sets like 50s-current. If they are, you should not share pinions and ring gears with non paired parts.
Hello gentlemen, I bought a new ring and pinion set, used but in very good condition ( original Ford ). I couldn't bear the thought of damaged gears spinning in my freshly overhauled axle. Peace of mind comes first. Thank you all for your helpful suggestions.
