I Replaced the pinion seal a few months ago in the old Winters Quick Change and it's leaking again. Made a nasty mess under the car and on my shop floor. In a week or so I'll have the car down at the World of Wheels car show and it would be bad manners having the car piss 90 weight on the floor so I pulled the old seal tonight and I noticed the flange bolt holding the flange to the input shaft was not very tight. I thought "Hmmmmmm, maybe I just need to tighten the bolt" but if that didn't fix the leak I'd have to pull it all back apart again. Headed down to Speedway tomorrow A.M. for a new seal. Nobody in town carries this seal. It has "Winters" stamped on the seal. Speedy Bill has one in stock for a mere $13.50.
You should be able to buy a seal using the dimensions, outside diameter X internal diameter X depth, looking at the seal in the pic, it ''looks'' very much like a common o'l front or rear oil seal from a T350 / C4 automatic ..
Hey man it would be a shame if you got that swank garage and never got to wrench in it right? that does suck though, hopefully the fix fixes it this time
The spline leak is a very real thing. Also, I have seen one leak after 2 new seals, no discernable wear on the yoke, but fixed with a speedy sleeve.
That is something to think about! The seal surface on the flange ain't all that cool.....has some little spots that look like it may have gotten rusty sometime in it's life. I'll see if speedy bill sells a sleeve. If not, we have a great [precision] bearing house here. Thanks
But it's a 30's Ford....if it's not leaking you're out of oil... J/k. Hope it's as easy as a new seal for ya.
Can't remember if my Champ has one, but I just built a 9-inch Ford rearend for a customer and there's a big washer that sits just in front of the pinion bearing between it and the seal. If that's missing, the pressure from inside the diff could be forcing oil past the seal. I've seen that mentioned a few times, so thought I'd throw that out there.
yeah, I vented it. Cruised down to Speedway and scored my new seal. They didn't have a speedi sleeve for it tho. I found O'Rielleys has 'em with the install kit for $35. It needs one. Pick it up this afternoon.
@Rocky ... at our Hot Rod Shoppe we have to install speedi-sleeves or install new yokes to stop leaks..... we learned the hard way years ago.
Yeah, me too, Glenn. Speedi-sleeve is installed on the flange, new seal is pressed into place and tomorrow I'll throw the flange back on and put the driveshaft back in. Prolly have to hit the auto parts to score some new gear oil. Hell, I might ever use the coupe to pick up my oldest grandson from school tomorrow afternoon. He's been begging me to do it. His dad picked him up in his zo-6 a few months ago and he was really excited about that.
^^^^^ Yeah, the seal has a tension spring in it so I always load the inside of the seal with bearing grease as well as the sealing surface. It's all back together and I used the car to pick up my oldest grandson from middle school. He was blown away! All his buddies thought the car was "awesome!!!" so now Tony has a few more "awesome" points. I took a look under the car after that errand to find everything is nice and dry. Success!!!!!!!
@Rocky you're a Hot Rod Mechanic and a Grandpa Hero all-in-one, so proud of your brother, God Bless you!
Sounds like it’s fix but another thing you can do is take the garder spring out of the seal. Unscrew it apart. Snip about an 1/8 inch off the smaller dia end and screw it back together. Adds tension to the seal.
Damn! This was supposed to be on my new '23 World of wheels car show thread but I can't find it! Thanks, Tim
