just got the flames done on my truck and I'm trying to figure out the best color to stripe the flames in.

I thought maybe white, don't want blue, but really like apple(lime-ish)green.

    ideas, suggestions?

    i can't picture white...green would be ok,but i always like blue

  4. I'm a traditionalist so I'd opt for white, but they have to be thin or it looks out of place.White against black has a tendency to amplify the line width.Or you could keep it in the color family and use either bright red or maroon or even a purple.Blue has been done to death and I have mixed feelings about green.JMHO

Process Blue is the safe choice.
But you don't want that. [IMG]

Ray suggested White, which actually looks better than it sounds.(at least to me)
    Lettering White,not Polar White.

    How about Robins Egg Blue?
It's pale enough that it will almost look White against Black.
But being a Cool color it would add a little depth to the design.
Or mix up a lighter tint of Robins Egg Blue.

Green could work,if it wasn't too dark.
    Dark Green would look TERRIBLE.

Sometimes you just have to try it.And be prepared to wipe it off.

Heard a story of a guy who couldn't decide what color to outline a set of flames.
So he did part one color,
    and part another color,
planning on asking the customer which he liked best.
The customer loved the idea so much he ended up doing the whole job in different colors. [IMG]

the green I keep going to is a almost lime green, or granny-smith apple green. I saw a set of flames outlined in that and liked'em.
do you think I have too much yellow for that?
there wasn't supposed to be as much yellow left, but it ended up that way

  9. I like Ian's idea about the light blue. You might even want to try a bit of medium gray;against the black it might come off as white.I've used that in lieu of white on a lot of flat black paint jobs and it comes across like white.

Purple is the complimentary color to Yellow,so they should work together.
    HOWEVER
1-Shot Purple,or Proper Purple are probably too close to Black to give enough contrast.
And if you went lighter on the Purple to increase the contrast,
towards Violet,it could end up looking feminine. [IMG]

If you think you have too much Yellow, how about you outline the flames in Vermillion,or Fire Red.
And then add a White outline around the whole thing. [IMG]

It would have to be done VERY well, but I think it would be effective.

  11. I did some yellow/orange flames on my old Chevy truck in slime green...looked great (if I do say so myself [IMG] ). I like the idea of purple...something different AND it'll look cool! Red would be cool, too.

I think you answered your own question when you said: "but really like apple(lime-ish)green"...

I think the lime-ish green would look tits, personally...

Especially if you were to add some striping of the same color elsewhere on the car...

    cool..
when I called the local joint that sells oneshot, he said no go on a color like that, said emerald green was close.
I bought it, and its too dark.
so I went to see an ol'ecsentric custom painter/striper and he said get some poppy(sp)yellow and add a few drops of that green to it!
hows this sound? I'm in no way a artistic type, so all help is appreciated.

  17. Chrome Yellow with a little Emerald Green makes a nice "Slime Green"...just start with a little Emerald Green and keep adding until it's the shade you want. It's a good covering color as well...at least it was until the smart guys at One Shot started removing lead from their paint...who knows how it'll do now...but that's another rant. [IMG]

Of course I'm a little late with this one...

The lime green is pretty commom, and blue, although done to death, is my favorite...

What a bout tinting some white to an antique white or 'faded white? My friend does a lot of striping like that and the color looks great, especially on older stuff.

If you are going to run WWW tires....then WHITE pinstriping.

If you are going to run blackwalls...then SLIME GREEN.

It's as simple as that. I prefer white because it is the most traditional color to outline flames in (more so than process blue), but that's just me. Check out Tom McMullen's Roth-flamed roadster on the cover of Street Rodder this month for an example...Or Bob McCoy's '40 Tudor. These are two of the most classic flame jobs ever, both outline striped in white.

And to add to Barnett's post, Chrome Yellow and Emerald Green mixed do make a nice muddy slime green, and Lemon Yellow and Emerald Green mixed will make a less muddy true lime green.

Bass, yes it's got a fresh set of WWW and painted steelies(not painted yet do to pinstripe color troubles).
BUT, will the slime green work with all the yellow I have(too much yellow to me but too late)
I'm totally not artistic, so color choses are hard for me.

  21. grump, if you get enough yellow in that lime green concoction, it'll work great with those flames. personally, i'd probably go white though-not real exciting, but real traditional.

  30. Hey Grumpy,

    First, Nice looking flames, Congraulations.

Second, I know you don't want it, but Process Blue 1Shot is the best choice. Honest.
