By the owner of the car who's just started to learn pinstriping?

It's the best I've ever seen.

tcoupekyle: There's something uniquely cool about being able to pinstripe their own car.
    Give yourself a big CONGRATS.
You did and excellent stripping job.
    Just like a pro.
Keep practicing as others will soon be asking you to stripe their cars.

You asked for an honest opinion..........I think what you did shows you have the talent to do it and did a good job on what is there............But I think its too small for the large back area. I would make it slightly larger overall by adding some surrounding/expanding stripes, and then run a stripe along the lower edge of the trunk a short ways so that it breaks up the large area a little more. When I was younger, they used to sell "pinstripe decals" for us really poor guys. Thats what it reminded me of when I first saw yours. Again, not trying to knock what you did, I think you did really well......I just think you need to expand on it a little.:)

For practice, get a piece of glass from the hardware store. You can lay it on top of a design of your choice. Stripe the glass. When done you can either wipe it off, or let it dry and scrape it off with a razor blade.

  9. i could agree there’s allot of real estate on this car. My worry is I’m not very good but it needed something so I figured with a smaller piece 1. I don’t have as much to sand off but 2. Mistakes are as gleamingly obvious.
But, I agree I think a bit bigger would be better but I don’t have the gall, gumption, huevo is to go bigger, yet. I may practice a bit and see what I can do though.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Most of the people who do this stuff didn't just pick up a brush and go, they experimented and practiced. You obviously have the hand and eye co-ordination, now you just have to develop your artistic side by looking at what others have done and seeing what looks good and what doesn't. Don't be afraid to make a mistake, all the ones before you made mistakes too. I'd look at not only the designs, but how they either compliment the panel or just occupy a space.

I think the work is very artistic. I like it but……
I too think the designs need to be much larger.
I’d also pay for your work on my vehicles.

Looks good to me, straight and even but agree that it's a little small for the area involved.

Tasteful! Not overdone like some pinstriping jobs. Perhaps others disagree completely. I think pinstriping should be an accent, not a focus.

It could be bigger but it's pretty good for a first try. Consistency in shape and symmetry will come the more you practice, but I've seen a lot worse work that people paid for, so I'd say you're well on the right track.

It’s cool that you tried your own and hopefully you’ll continue doing it. As you do more you’ll develop more consistent line widths, smoother joins between lines, and an eye for your own designs. All that takes time and practice. Take pictures along the way and look back now and then - you’ll enjoy seeing your progress.

    Thanks for posting.

You've mentioned sanding it off a couple times. I've always understood that paint thinner or gun wash would take striping off a glossy paint job without damaging the substrate. Might be a better thing to try first rather than sanding.

  23. i think that’s really was
yeah, If I decide to remove it I’d try some chemicals first. What didn’t come off with chemicals I’d sand off, the car could really use a drop coat of clear anyway

Not sure I can even word this right.
    I'll try.
When it comes to traditional hot rod and custom artwork on a car...
    flames, lace, pinstriping, etc...
    I love perfection.
    It's awesome!
    And yet...
    I also love imperfection.
Hard to explain why. I think some of you might understand even without an explanation.
Perfection can make something difficult look almost easy. Imperfection shows some effort. It illustrates the human spirit. So as far as I'm concerned, even the effort to produce something artistic can be a pleasure to behold.
And I think imperfection might lend itself well to the medium that so many here like to work in.
    Sometimes, imperfect just seems...
    ... perfect.

I imagine pinstriping could very easily become an involving passion or an addiction with the highs and lows that that entails. Almost by definition it has to be an all consuming activity if looking to aspire to pleasing results. Probably few quick wins. Metal shaping, guitar, bead rolling, welding etc, same deal.

    Looks great. Enjoy the experience!

I understand the replies stating there’s a lot of real estate to fill, but small and subtle works for my untrained eye.

ie some striping around door handles, or mirrors, emblems, etc. just a small accent that makes it different than another similar vehicle.

    But that’s just me.

Rickybop nailed it. I tell people I’m human and there will be some variation in my striping. If you want perfect side to side mirror image, get a decal.
