So my dad had some work done on his 55 chevy by a friend of a friend. Well they thought it would be a good idea to put some pinstriping on the truck and the hood and it looks cool and my dad likes it. So problem is they put his name and my mom's name on the doors and that's not sitting well with him. To much like nascar for his liking. The paint is 30 year old single stage paint. And the names were put on mid last year. I looked on line but didn't like what I found. And I also know the hamb has a lot of strippers. So I was hoping to get good advice. It's under tthe window center. If you can see it. I put the picture up because we love pictures
Most of the strippers use lettering enamel. You should be able to use enamel reducer to remove the paint and not hurt the body color. You may have to compound the area after removal. Vic
If the paint is real good and hard Easy-Off oven cleaner works great and will not harm the paint. My paint did not have a clear coat so I can't comment on that. I used a small "acid" brush but a 1/2" cheapo brush cut off will do to. Test a spot under your dash first. I just brushed some on the lettering, waited a minute or so and wiped off. The thicker the stripping or lettering may take a few times... The stripping paint was One-Shot. Good luck.
MEK will take the stripes off and not hurt the paint. Well unless its cheap paint. Wipe the under side of the fender well first. In case Vic doesn't get to you he means take a little rubbing compound and rub it. The enamel reducer may make the paint dull I that place.
Should be fine. A good pinhead will wipe one down before he starts striping anyway. I use MEK because the guy I learned from used it. its not legal in industry any more but you can buy small cans in about any home improvement store.
I don't know if I should recommend this method as I tried it on my very old paint which I don't really care whether it gets damaged or not. I was removing some very thick striping in order to extend a design and just for the hell of it tried using some GoJo hand cleaner on a rag dipped in wax and grease remover. Had to rub pretty hard but the striping I wanted off was removed(along with some I didn't) and although it dulled the surface a bit a little polishing compound brought it right back.
X2 on the Easy Off Oven Cleaner, I've seen Mitch Kim (local pin striping legend) use it for years to remove one shot enamel.
More likely to be recommending polishing compound to hand buff area. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Easy off will remove old timey 1 shot lettering. We used it to remove lettering from truck door. Don't leave it on long as it will eat the base paint as well. CAUTION it will remove the skin from your fingers and the vision from your eyes . Be careful !
