Two more thoughts as I read.
Always clean the brush with mineral spirits BEFORE AND AFTER use.
Use a squirt bottle and shoot a little thinner into a cup, rinse the brush, pat dry, throw away that squirt of spirits and repeat with new thinner until all signs of paint are gone, then pat dry, and oil with brush oil.
It doesn't take but a squirt of fresh thinner each time you rinse.
Do the same with the oil in the brush before you start to stripe.
Pat dry to get rid of thinner.
I always spin the brush between my palms to get out excess thinner.

I don't use lard oil or any vegetable oil cause it attracts vermin, and spoils.
Buy a can of proper brush oil, it will last forever.
I am always surprised at how cheap stripers are when it comes to their tools.

They are a negligible cost and gets you into the proper respect for your tools.

Last, Water serves no purpose in the striping process.
