I was in search of some tools today and found this ashtray that I had long forgotten about. My grandfather, who I think machined it into its current form, always had it sitting on his ba*****t workbench. Any thoughts on what it may be out of? Most likely it would have been something pre-50s. It measures 3 - 13/16" in diameter. IMG_1321.jpg IMG_1322.jpg IMG_1323.jpg

Looks like he made it into an ashtray. (I can't remember the last time I saw an ashtray. They were once common)

My guess would be some kind of hydralic cylinder. I don't understand the lack of a retaining mechanism for what would be the piston pin.

My guess is that it was never a piston, just an ashtray, if you look at vintage ashtrays a lot of them have grooves around the base.

  6. Probably 2 stroke .

I’ve seen some pistons with that weird wrist pin set up out of old snowmobiles.

It's not quite a 327 piston, but then again it's not much different.

Definitely was a press fit piston with half of the wrist pin boss machined off. Possibly had a skirt at one time that was machined off also.

In HS metal shop, we melted down old pistons and poured ashtrays (shaped like the US) for our moms to use as mother's day gifts.

  13. Some of the early Detroit Diesels I worked on had multiple piece pistons.
