    Bare with me guys...

I love old Pith Helmets...they go hand-in-hand with the dry lakes and B-ville... I like 'em with a lot of old hot rod logo's, and old speed equipment decals, and old pinstriping and old artwork(like WWII Bomber nose art etc.)...faded...distressed...ya know?...history.

Sooo...I got me an idea to buy an old Pith Helmet off'n ebay, and send it out to all you artist types, and have you put your own nostalgic touch to this helmet.

I'm not lookin' for freebies here guys.... I will pay for everything. The artists get paid for their work, and I pay all shipping costs from one artist to the other. The artists will be paid either by PayPal or by check immediately. Their choice.

A showpiece of what the hamb artists have to offer...

I don't want real decals and such applied...but painted on decals and such that would be available back in the day...maybe distressed?

Naturally, the first artist would have to paint the H.A.M.B. logo over that stupid decal that is on the hat now. Then we ship it to the next artist and have them put their bit of nostalgia on it...remember, it has to be something that would be available back in the '40's-'50's...no tiki stuff or rockabilly...you get the point.

When it's all said and done, I take the Pith with me and the coupe on tour in '07, and at the end of the year, we can auction it off and the $$$ goes to Ryan.

This is where the rest of the Hamb members come in. You guys need to submit ideas(pics) of stuff that you think will look good on it.

The artists can send their info to me...obviously space is limited on the helmet, and so is time...all artists must be willing to commit to a time frame, and then ship it on to the next artist.

    Whadda ya'll think?

Safariknut has the 2 wildest Pith helmets I've seen,so far.

It would take some doing to top them.

When it's all said and done, I want the hat to look like a piece of luggage from a Bugs Bunny cartoon, where he ships a package around the world and it comes back with all these stickers from other countries...dig?

Either way count me in...I'll PM you my info

  17. Larry, what is that helmet made of? Is it stamped steel, plastic, aluminum? If it can be done, some louvers around the brim would set it off.

I have a Civil Defense helmet I'm considering giving a similar treatment.

Thank you Tingler for the kind words...I meant no disrespect by limiting this project to non-tiki...non-rockabilly art. I'm old, and I like old style ways... Note, I didn't say 'Old School'..I hate that term...I like old advertising!!

Actually Mike, Pith is a wood product from the Pith tree. This helmet is wood with an enamel (I'm guessing) paint-type covering. It can be painted on...

  21. It looks like it is a resin-impregnated fabric known commonly as linen Micarta.I have one made of the same material and an earlier one of paper Micarta. That is essentially a substance resembling paper using a resin stabilizer.Great for painting on and if you drop them, they might chip but don't crack. Not bullet-resistant though.
    Here's a few I've done.

Yeah, if there's any room left ... It would look really "authentic" if the logos/decals overlapped, but it would be a real shame to cover up someone elses hard work. I suppose that's an executive decision up to you. BTW, make sure that helmet will fit you! I saw a couple at the surplus store the other day that were a so-called "large" that a 10 year old would have a hard time squeezing on his melon. Maybe I just have a big head ...
Yes, but if there is room, I'd like to paint something, particularly if this is going to be auctioned for charity.

As a matter of fact, I think they should overlap a little on each other...would make it look more authentic...as long as all the artists don't mind?

And the helmet is adjustable...it fits me fine, and ya'll know I've gotta big head...
