What do I need to do to protect whatever is on the back side of what I am plasma cutting? I need to cut on a together and running car and will I damage the trans or anything on the other side of the cut? My thought is to put a piece of sheetmetal under there I don't think it will cut that if it's not up tight against the part I am cutting. Thoughts?

I've got a few various sized pieces of 1/8" aluminum lying around that I use for the same thing. Works well.

  3. the temps of your plasma"spray" from cutting is in the 40,000 degree range,so fire safety is a concern. a block panel of non flamable material or sheet metal would be a good idea....

Go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap welding blanket.
