Plastic Epoxy Bond to Metal ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by swade41, Jan 16, 2010.

  1. I'm trying to figure out a way to mount a plastic taillight lense into my stake pockets. Do they make an epoxy or something to secure it to metal ?
I need to keep the lense flush on the inside of the pocket to be able to fit a bulb up in there. I don't want to use the chrome besel, I'm trying to keep the shiny stuff off this one.

I use some stuff called Fusor, available at most auto body supply stores. They make all sorts of adhesives, use cruise the book for their metal bonding system. Not cheap, but good!

most epoxies will bond to plastic and metal.

Are you going to be able to change the bulb if the lense is glued in?
Well, if not, or if you just want another idea for doing it, keeping the lense removable...here goes.
Weld a thin trim ring, or piece of 1/8 welding wire formed to fit inside the area, or use a piece of tubing just slightly smaller than the lense. Put the lense in place, and scribe a line around the tubing....use a cut-off tool (with the thinnest blade) to put a slight groove on that line. Then use a snap ring to hold the lense in. You can use strip caulk, which doesn't harden, to seal the lense from having water get inside your housing. You'll barely see the snap ring and the lense can come out for service/replacement whenever you want!

  12. My plan was to cut an access door on the inside of the bed to access inside the stake pocket. I made a replica box out of white cardboard that I'm using to see if a 1157 type bulb is just as bright through the lense from the side vs. straight on like normal.
It's kinda hard to see a difference but I do see lots of spots after staring at it a while.
