Does anyone know where I can get a set of vintage style plastic seat covers - with the embossed pattern - somewhere other than JC Whitney-? - for my 2 door hardtop with a front bench seat - Thanks!
I'm not sure how much you're wanting to throw at a set of those seat covers... but i'm sure if you sourced the material an upholsterer could whip some up in a jiff. Sweet van btw.
Gee I think I still have parts of one permanently stuck to my butt from coming back from Hermosa beach when I was about 10, seriously I saw some at the Turlock swap this Spring so they are out there not sure if they were repop or vintage... will be a classic touch. now if I can just find that aluminum Christmas tree and color wheel
Call these guys, back in the day they made them. http://www.yellowbot.com/sure-fit-seat-covers-upholstery-seattle-wa.html In the 50's and 60's Many many PNW cars had their clear plastic seat covers installed when they were new. But they also sold the seat covers you are looking for and they would custom make seat covers for the guys in the area.
Sears - oh, wait, that's where my dad got the covers for his '66 New Yorker after he bought it in 1967. Seriously, probably some floating around swap meets, but if they're old stock I'd wonder how crunchy they'd be?
I did some thinking on this too (God only knows why)... but i've seen shower curtains that had the right thickness and clarity to be used as material to have a set made. They're also good for wrapping dead bodies in the trunk of your car at 2am out the back door of your local motel because that cheating hussy ran around on you with your best friend... uh.... yeaaah...
Thats what they feel like.. shower curtains.. I have the 60/40 set in my Dodge.. Epay is the place.. there always on there.. your choice of colors too..
Try here.. http://www.nextag.com/plastic-car-seat-covers/search-html other sources out there on the web
My grandma's Galaxie had those when I was a kid....she must have gotten them put on in the 60s....god AWFUL in the sun!!!! Your flesh would roast.... but the seats looked great 20 years after they were put on!!
My Dad got a set from JC Whitney for his Hudson, they fit great and make your butt sweat. I know you were looking for another source, but JCW doesn't actually make them. Mark
I think the major upholstery suppliers still carry that material and I have put a few sets on over the years but you wont like them,if you do get some put them in the sun for awhile before installing.
Thanks for all the good tips - I can't really explain why I feel the need to have the backs of my legs look like fresh waffles - I'll post a pics (of the seats) when I find them and install them
ABC Upholstery a division of Lebaron-Bonney sells them, or used to anyway, ABC does repop skins for mid-fifties Ford and offers these also. It's a "flavor" thing, gives your car the 50s flavor.
My grand parents had them in their 64 Ford . You ALWAYS wore long pants when we were in that car no matter what time of year or how hot it was ! They got theirs when they bought the car . It did protect the seats forever , they even had their living room furniture done like that too ! Stayed new forever too !
