That's a whack of leaves! When I take some out I'll be able to make some s****s for metalworking.

Yep 32, with rocky mountain brake drums. It looks like the wishbone is damaged back from the axle a few inches? Be very careful removing the perch bolts, popular items as well as the rest.

Rocky Mountain Drums...Aftermarket from what I've read but I've seen so many here in CT. I had thought they were a stock item?

It's the much sought after 32 heavy Axle.

Kinda makes more sense.... As I said earlier - it looks like it's hardly - if ever - been apart. Still had the original style cotter pins in most nuts.

Got lucky as I got it with the 27 T that was complete, minus a front axle, so I just grabbed the most compete one he had. Also got 5 - '32 spoked wheels for it.

Spent a part of today trying to release the nuts from the perch - Arggh!

I ended up soaking it down in WD40 again and I'll let it sit for another day. I'm not in a rush and don't want to damage it.

  12. you need to heat the axle too
also just loosen the nut and wack that.......dont hit the perch
dont cut the brake tab off...guys like me need that

I know - but I was just trying to get the nuts off! Hopefully I can get them off without too much damage - before going after the perch!

Try something other than WD-40, Kroil... PB... etc. In my experience WD-40 is not a penetrant.

First of all yes its 32
So are the perch’s .. 32 only and hard to find. You want to save them .. Even if the ends mushroom.
After you heat the nuts and get them off.
Its best to put it in the press and apply up to 15 tons of pressure and start heating the axle around the perch holes.
Be ready for a fairly loud bang when they break loose …. Then pour the penitrent to it and push em out.

  16. 32-34 are the same perch

Hey Greg, what is the difference between the 32 perch bolts and the 33-4 perch bolts other than the part number? I have both here but never noticed any difference between them.

    Not sure
I recall something about “1/8”” …. I rarely have any to compare.
But they always ask me for 32’s specifically … either way one of three years they are worth trying to save

Oh definitely worth saving no matter if they are 32 or 33-34, just curious.

Mix up some ATF and acetone. That will loosen stuff up.

I have ATF/Acetone already mixed up and have used it often - but I've never felt it did much more than WD40. Plus I have a TON of WD40 as they sponsor my website! ;)

Thanks all for the info and interest - I will definitely save them - because I want to use them! Your info will help me get them out without damaging them hopefully (I'll try the press method first).

  23. There was a post on here, using puller out of c-channel that pulled the perch pin out, rather than pushing it.

...and another method I saw (from NeilinCA), was to use an air hammer to hammer on the end while heating the axle, but I can see this damaging it somewhat - whether you use a blunt hammer tip, or a pointed tip in the middle of the perch shaft....

    But options are good.

I've done the air hammer and heat method many times with little or no damage to the perch. I use a good quality air hammer and a tapered point bit. Rest the axle and wishbone ***embly upside down with the end you will be hammering on set up on a jack stand. A little heat, a little pb blaster and the air hammer. I've never had it not work, and I've taken apart some crusty east coast stuff. Patience helps as it is usually not immediate. I've had to work them back and forth a few times. Wear hearing and eye protection with the air hammer also. It gets loud.

Got the perches out today. Started with the air hammer and a pointed tip, then ended up using a 3 lb sledge on it to break it loose. No damage!

Cool on the getting them out with no damage. According to what my dad told me years ago when we were looking at a stock 32 Ford at a car show the "Rocky Mountain" brakes were an option. You paid a few bucks extra for brakes that had a bit more stopping power and more fade resistance.
