    A,B,(E)

A class fuels are things like paper, wood, carpet, furnishings etc

B class fuels are flammable liquids, gasoline, paint, thinners, turps

    (E) is in brackets because it is not actually a class of fuel. It indicates that electricity is involved. In reality what is burning will probably be an A class fuel but with the possibility of live conductors present.

This kind of extinguisher is the most versatile and probably covers all the stuff you might have in your car or shed.

They are the messy dry chemical type, but I'd rather have a bit of white powder to clean up than a pile of smouldering rubble.

Problem with this is that a CO2 extinguisher probably won't work so well on a fuel fire (and possibly a concealed fire like under the dash). All the CO2 does is momentarily deprive the fire of oxygen. If the fuel and heat are still present when the oxygen (air) is reintroduced then the fire will reignite. Dry chem may be messy but it works.

  3. Definantly need a larger one as well as one of the small ones. I've used small ones to put out bin fires 'near' my car, and was shocked at how long the don't last!

One for safety and one bigger on in the boot is my plan.
