Alright everyone this is important So Listen Up cause this could mean trouble for a whole bunch of us!I found out on Thursday that the guy selling registration for old cars from New York has been busted and turned over the records to everyone he sold to including a god friend of mine who now has to part his car out and sell everything that he has been working for for the last two years! My friend recently purchased registration from the guy in question an sent it in to license his t-bucket a month after sending in the registration to have the car titled he recieved a letter in the mail from the secretary of state here in illinois saying that he needed to contact them asap.So thursday afternoon he called them and they told him that the registration for the car he sent in was not bought from who he said it was and that the registration had been bought from the dealer in new york and that he was going to be charged with a felony for trying to falsify registratn of a vehicle and that if he ever tried to titl the car in illinois that charges will be brought against him and he will serve jail time and that he is 1 of 500 people in illinois that are currently having registraion of their vehicles pulled and cars will be taken off the road! Also that there are a total of 5 states on watch for selling old titles and registration for old cars that no longer exist.Including Illinois, Kansas, Arkansas and two other states in which i can not remember what he told me! They told him the only way he can title his car is to have it inspected and built to todays saftey standards which included airbags so he told them to get fucked! So needless to say we all may be in danger of no longer being able to title vehicles that there are no longer registration for.

ive known not to buy new york titles for about 7 years now, they dont work in MN.

Why get rid of it? Why part it out? Seems like a stupid way to go around this. Just toss the New York title in the trash and come up with something else...

  6. yeah...here in Minnesota , my father got in trouble with one of those New York registrations in 1986

Same shit everywhere. If you don't have your ducks in a row you get screwed. Here in NC it's not hard if you pay attention. But if you try to work them, they'll work you. Same story that we've heard a thousand times.

Not to question the veracity of this tale, but "a friend of mine" and "a guy from New York"? And scraping the car when so many options are available to save it? Could you kindly be just a bit more specific?

I hate to hear that about your buddy but if it's the guy who screwed me out of 300.00 from up there I hope they throw him under the jail. He took my money several years ago and never provided a title and we tried for months to get him prosecuted with no luck. I ended up gettin a local bonded title for the car but it seems to be different from state to state. Will have to look through my recors as I cant remeber the name right off. They used to advertise in roundup magazine though.

Edit: just reread the original post and think it was a different situation then the one I referenced. The guy I was refering to was a title service who was getting old cars titled through Maine or somewhere else. He was orig doing them in NY and they shut him down then went to Maine but I think they did the same. He is based in NY however.

I think the BS is on the modern safety and airbag comment. If he follows whatever system the state has for registering the car, usually a bill of sale for all major components, a safety inspection, and possibly a bonded title, he will be able to register the car with a state provided VIN.

I guess Georgia is pretty lax then because you can have the car inspected [vin verified] and then pay a couple hundred dollars and they will do a bonded title on it. It's a little different then a standard title but typically there are no problems down the road. Wish I had found that out prior to the guy in NY stealing the 300.00 from me as the bonded one came in under 200.00. Not sure what other states do the same but may be worth looking into.

Hell who knows man i'm new to this hotrod building stuff so when someone i know gets screwed when it comes to builin a rod i want to try to help people by gettin the word out as to what my state is doing to my friend. As far as my name hell my uncle gave me that nickname back when i was in grade school and its always stuck with me eve after he passed.

  24. New York is a title state for 1974 and newer, anything earlier is transferred via the registration, but I suppose that a registration could be as bogus as a title if the guy is a big enough crook, hang 'em and hang 'em high. Peace,,,Moosie

Down here they won't let you register them unless they have current insurance. I do however have the Sheriff come out and do a vin verification sheet on them before I get too deep into one and then that is the first step in getting a bonded title if the car doesnt have a title at all. Georgia doesn't require a title on pre-86 stuff so there is a lot of stuff that gets bought and sold with nothing other then a bill of sale here.

There is a simple answer to this whole title/reg. deal. Before starting a build check with the HEAD MVD office in your state to see what it takes to obtain a legit title/reg on a car built from parts. If you have to built it to 2008 standards ,which I really doubt, that leaves only the opition of buying a car with a legit title/reg.
I have ,over the years, done it both ways. Last year took my 27 T Roadster to the MVD inspection/liecnse office ,was inspected issued title and plates and was done in 90 minutes. My car had no-none factory ID numbers on body or engine,I built the frame. I did show up with a large pile of recepits though. But, I had none for the body or engine-trans. Car was fully street legal equipment wise, drove it to the inspection on a temp permit.
This is in Arizona and and your state may have other standards. The first car I built in 61 had 4 MVD inspectors looking and trying to figgure out what to do for 3 hours. LOL
Ask your local MVD how they handle kit cars, you are just providing most of the kit. Haven't seen a kit car yet that met current new car standards.

i do agree where he went wrong was to try to title it as a 23 t and not a kit or replica but for me my car is all steel and want it titled as a 32 chevrolet

  28. I always start a project build with a correct title to the frame, or body that I will be building! It makes it legal and easy to sell when I want to move on to the next project. Had problems once with getting a title for a "57 Chevy when I was right out of high school, thus learned early that when you buy a part with a VIN # on it, walk away if it doesn't come with the correct papers.

  29. ...sell the car to someone in another state, they can get it titled and then sell it back to your friend.
